As I Felt The Even Tide

The wide, windy waves washed in
But I stayed dry
The grave breakers broke again
As I nodded off inside

And then, when the empress ran aground
And my eyes turned blue and green
I heard a gorgeous sound
And that's when it became a dream
When the sky fell in
When the hurricanes came for me
I could finally crash again
And that's how I became the sea

Became The Sea - Owl City

The morning comes all too soon, Sora's 'impending sunrise' alarm chiming from the floor and waking him. He flails a hand out trying to find it, dragging his fingers along the ship's floor until finally bumping it with his knuckles. He snatches it, hits snooze, and tosses it back to the floor before rolling over to curl his arms around Roxas.

His merman.

His husband.

His mate.

♌You're squeezing me really hard,♌ Roxas mumbles, but follows up with a chuckle as he hugs back. ♌I like it.♌

⛎I don't wanna get up,⛎ Sora sighs. ⛎My everything is sore.⛎

♌Sorry,♌ Roxas apologizes, kissing the crown of his head. ♌I...was I too much?♌

⛎No, no,⛎Sora laughs breathlessly. ⛎It's just...been a long time so my body wasn't used to so much--⛎ he snorts. ⛎Let's call it 'activity'. It'll get easier the more we do it.⛎

♌More? Like now?♌Roxas asks with a grin and Sora snorts.

⛎No way, it's nearly morning, Roxas. You gotta head back,⛎Sora answers, and lets out a deep sigh.

He can't wait until they can tell everyone, can't wait until he can park a boat at a private dock or just anchor it out in the ocean right outside the sanctuary, so they never have to cut their mornings short again.

Technically there's no reason they can't tell them now. They're officially bonded. Breaking them apart would only result in Roxas's untimely death, and the scientific community would never want that. Not with a rarity like Roxas and all the strides in Leviathan studies being made by observing him.

There's only one problem Sora can think of with announcing it immediately.

The Falmouth sanctuary would take a hit in regards to professionalism, maybe even lose some of its funding. Cid might even catch some flack. For the good doctor to allow something like this to happen under his purview would make the rest of the community look down on his ability to manage his people. Sora wouldn't be able to live with himself if he damaged Cid's reputation.

If for no other reason, they should wait until Sora is on his own, no longer under the employ of the Falmouth sanctuary. He could even find a publisher for the picture book he's been working on. Make some income from that so he can become independent. Once that happens, he could announce their bonding and there would be no backlash on Cid, just Sora for his lack of ethics and foresight.

⛎Next year...⛎ Sora starts, fingering the end of Roxas's braid. ⛎I'm...gonna try to fast track my career. Separate from the Falmouth Sanctuary.⛎

♌Mmm,♌Roxas hums to show he's listening.

⛎Then...we can tell everyone about us,⛎ Sora says, looking up into Roxas's lapis blue eyes. ⛎Everyone,⛎ he emphasizes.

♌No more secret meetings?♌ Roxas asks, brushing his fingers over the bandage Sora put over the tender bite mark on his shoulder. ♌No hiding? No fast mornings? Singing in front of the pods?♌
