We could be together
Everyday together
We could sit forever
As loving waves spill overThe moon is fully risen
And shines over the sea
As you glide in my vision
The time is standing still
Don't shy away too long
This is a boundless dream
Come close to me my reason
I'll take you in my wingsSarah Khider - Mermaid Song

The boat's been lurching, the hold filling up with water for the past ten minutes. The trickle in was slow at first, but now it's coming in faster, like a river. Roxas is sure that with another few lurches of the boat, it'll come in like a torrent, filling the hold to a bursting capacity.
Soon. Soon he can get out of here.
When sea water gushes down the stairs Sora exited out of, Roxas readies himself. The water level rises and the boat tips to the side. Boxes crash as Roxas's cage falls over. His head slams into the bars eliciting a growl, but within seconds, everything is submerging as the ocean invades the hold.
It's completely dark. All the lights that were in the hold before have flickered out and now, Roxas can't see even an inch in front of him. He feels around to orient himself, shoving the top of the cage open when he finds it. After slipping out, he keeps pawing around the pitch black interior of the hold, trying to uncover those stairs.
What he'd give for his mother's Leviathan eyesight now.
He finally finds the stairs just as the whole boat shakes again. Then the boat settles. Roxas concludes that the vessel has made it to the bottom, and he can only hope the trawler didn't land on the wrong side. If it did, he'll be stuck here until more rescue arrives.
Roxas pulls himself through the narrow stairway that leads out. He scrapes his sides a little, but that's a small price to pay to get the hell out of there. A moment later, he's free from the claustrophobic confines of the boat and up he swims.
When he breaches the surface, he takes a quick look around to determine his safety and location. No other boats that he can see, but that doesn't mean they aren't coming. He takes note of the star positions, and once he's sure he knows the right way, he dives again, staying underwater as he swims with all his speed back towards the Sanctuary.
It takes longer than Roxas expected before he's able to see the lights of Falmouth. Two hours at least. He can't believe how far away the poachers made it with him, but it doesn't matter now. He escaped, and they'll never have a chance at a second try.
The moment he's over the sandbar, Roxas is swarmed by merfolk. Marakihau and Rusalka alike flank him on all sides with loud clicking and relieved trilling noises.
"We thought you were long dead, Roxas!" says an older male Rusalka. "Plucked and left for sharks! "
♌They didn't get a single scale,♌ Roxas tells them proudly.
"How lucky of you to escape!" says a Marakihau girl. "Our own were hurt before returning."
Roxas remembers, concern washing over him as he grabs the nearest Marakihau. ♌Hermod! Skuld and Vali--are they alright?♌ he asks urgently.
"All of them are at the humans' tanks on land for recovery," announces a Marakihau. "They were cut badly, but they will survive."
Roxas is so relieved, he lets out a choked up trill. His pod is hurt, but safe now.
