Some places in this chapter were actually adapted from the original novel, such as the thousand stone people and the flying sticks thingy. But as usual, I modified them here and there to fit the story line.—————————————————————————————————————————
Half a day had passed. According to the natural alarm in Wen Kexing's body, it's supposed to be around 5 in the morning. Before he opened his eyes, soft coughs were let out free from his mouth that alerted the boys who were chewing on their emergency packs.
"Lao Wen?"
The said man was still coughing, attempting to relieve the scratchy throat. When he still didn't manage to succeed, a single canteen was presented in front of him.
"Mr. Wen..."
The deep voice made Wen Kexing open his eyelids in an instant. Among his stifle coughs, he looked at the black-clad boy and the canteen he was offering. He was taken aback there would be a time when the boy took the initiative to approach him.
"Water," said Zhang Qiling calmly.
Wen Kexing gladly took the opened canteen and gulped down hungrily. It indeed helped to relieve his throat. "Wow! The water is cold, almost the same as the one we usually have in the mountain, A-Xu!" exclaimed him while glancing at his partner above him since he was still positioned in Zishu's arms. "It's perfect. Thank you. A-Xu, want some?"
"I already got mine from Wu Xie."
Hearing the polite decline, the man in white hair gave the canteen back to Qiling, sending the most heartwarming smile to the boy as gratitude.
"Mr. Wen, how are you feeling?" came the puppy-like boy. His hands looked busy cleaning some crumbles left on his mouth.
That was a good question. Wen Kexing also needed to know how far his body had healed. When he tried to move his body to sit, it surprised him to find the pain was lessened slightly more than he expected. He could still feel the tingling sensation on his back albeit bearable.
"I'm good! Your pills worked, Wu Xie. Thank you." He plastered the same smile. The merry tone was back in his speech which brought relief to the others.
"I'm glad." The boy exhaled a relaxed sigh. He would feel far more guilty if his savior's condition worsened because of his suggestion. He already caused the man to get injured that bad and didn't wish to put more burden. "Oh! Do you want to eat, Mr. Wen?"
The man shook his head. "We don't need to eat as much as normal people do. You can save your food."
"I see." Wu Xie lowered his head a bit as if feeling disappointed by the rejection. Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu who managed to see it merely stifled their laughter. Unknown to anybody, Qiling also followed their action.
"By the way, A-Xu, are you tired? You were holding me the whole time, right? Do you want to rest for a bit?" Kexing fussed over his soulmate after he could sit upright by himself and turned his body towards Zishu.
"Since when do you start underestimating me?"
"I'm not! I just don't want your beauty to fade because you lack sleep." He pouted cutely and innocently as if his flirtatious words were just a matter of fact.
