Vinnie's POV
Olivia continuously asked me what exactly me and her mom were talking about that was so important she had to leave the room. Each and every time the question was asked, I responded with "It was nothing really, she just said it was nice meeting me"
"Vinnie, that's bullshit," she threw her hands up in the air in an over exaggerated way causing me to flinch. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion with a head tilt as if she was trying to figure something out so I quickly carried on.
"It's not! Why is it so difficult to believe that she would actually like me?"
"You know it's not about that, it's how she literally told me to leave JUST so she could speak to you, you're keeping a secret from me and that doesn't sit right,"
"Liv, I'm not keeping any secrets from you," I reassured her. Was I lying? Maybe a bit, but it also felt like then wasn't the right time to say "Hey Liv, I know you're pretty mad at me right now, but guess what your mom told me? Our souls are allegedly entwined forever and ever!
There was no way she would've believed me, and even if she did, her reaction would almost certainly not be a positive one.
"I just don't believe you," she sighed as we walked into first class where a flight attendant was already waiting for us.
"Miss Thompson and Mr Hacker? Welcome aboard, and we hope the both of you enjoy your flight! Would you like anything to eat or drink?"
"No thank you," me and Olivia replied in unison.
"Please let me know if you need anything," she quickly whizzed off to check on the other passengers, leaving the two of us alone.
"Liv, it's nothing!" I said again when she gave me that look.
"Vinnie, I can read you like a fucking book! It's not nothing and we both know you're keeping whatever it is a secret,"
"All she said was that she wanted me to take care of you and make sure you're okay," I admitted.
"And?"
"I need to have your back, then you'll have mine,"
She was silent for a few minutes as the plane began to take off before speaking again.
"I've always had and will your back Vinnie, it just doesn't feel like you've done the same to me," her facial expression and tone of voice opened up another pit of guilt in my stomach because even when she was at her angriest with me, she still admitted to caring. For someone who was notoriously as stubborn as Olivia, that was a huge thing to do.
I didn't know how to reply to that, another apology wouldn't have sounded more genuine than my countless ones before, and every single thought of reassurance I wanted to express to her wasn't able to come out as words from my mouth. So instead, I just sat back and watched her turn around with a sigh.
Olivia's POV
The rest of the flight was silent, well apart from the music I was blasting through my airpods and the occasional check in from several flight attendants. At this point, anything to drown out my thoughts were appreciated.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have now arrived in Los Angeles. Please remove your seatbelts and exit the plane carefully. We hope you've enjoyed your flight, and hope to see you again soon.
After leaving the airport, I couldn't help but notice that Vinnie looked super jumpy and kind of... scared? We were waiting for our baggage and he was constantly glancing around, as if something was going to jump out of nowhere and snatch him up. His strange behaviour created a lot of questions I would have to ask him when we got back, but as we both got into my car that had been left there, a huge realisation was made.
Who knew that the trigger for it would be a fucking insect?
"Vinnie a fly just landed in your forehead," I went to flick it away when he flinched back with a gasp and a look of genuine fear in his eyes.
"What is up with you and why have you been acting so weird? I was just gonna flick it away, what did you think I was trying to-
THAT. Was when everything clicked.
"Let me see your forehead," I furrowed my eyebrows in determination.
"What? Olivia no-
My fingers brushed his curls that flopped over his forehead to the side, revealing four scratch marks across it.
The constant flinching.
The jumpy behaviour.
The bruise on his arm when he supposedly came back from his house before we left for the airport.
The nervous look in his eyes whenever she found a way to interact with him, whether it was by text or in person.
Everything, was making sense.
"She... she did this to you didn't she?" I whispered. He shook his head profusely, trying to cover up the marks with his curls again with eyes brimming full of tears. "Vin- please talk to me,"
The boy leaned back into the seat and looked into my eyes. For the first time in a while, I understood him, the pain, hurt and fear in his eyes were telling a story but there was so much more I needed to hear.
"When you were in England with Louis... I called Faith to hang out as a distraction, I thought you didn't care, but then when I realised what we were doing was wrong, she wouldn't let me cut her off,"
"Why?"
"She threatened to hurt you, she said she would make you regret ever coming here and when I begged her to leave you alone, listening to her and letting her take control was the only way to keep you safe," tears were seeping out of his eyes and rolling down the boy's face.
"Holy shit, Vinnie I-
My heart broke into pieces when his shoulder rested on my chest as he cried. It must have been such a burden to carry and what's worse was he was carrying it alone. I felt awful for not noticing earlier, this boy went through so much pain just to keep me safe, and didn't feel like he could tell me. My hand made its way up to his head and slowly ran through his curls to calm him down.
"I'm here now, Vin, I promise no one is ever gonna hurt you again, okay? You're safe with me," he sobbed quietly into my chest, and I cried along with him. We were both hurting and disappointed in ourselves but somehow just having each other made it feel a bit better, like my mum said, it would be best if we took care of one another.
But just because we weren't arguing anymore didn't mean I wasn't angry.
In fact, I was furious.
So what does one do when they have a problem?
It's a simple answer really.
You deal with the root of it.
