y/n l/n was laying in the backseat of her boyfriend, danny's car on a friday night. she had left the club with danny, her best friend debbie and debbie's boyfriend sam. debbie and sam were by a fire while danny and y/n were in the backseat. as the car rocked and steamed up, with every second that passed, she grew more and more irritated. danny grunted indicating he was done.
'is that it? i just lie here, you stick it in and wave it around a few times?' she aggressively stated.
'what else do you want?' danny almost grunted at her. 'another round?'
'fuck off.' y/n zipped up her jeans and slammed the car door on her way out. debbie saw her walk over and huff loudly. just as debbie sat next to y/n, the car reversed out and zoomed off into the night, leaving the 3 alone and stranded.
'what happened?' debbie asked, concern written on her features.
'danny being an asshole is what happened.' y/n muttered.
the 3 walked home in the warm air of summer nights. with their pinkies linked, the girls were ahead of sam, giggling and talking.
'what did danny do?' debbie asked softly.
'he doesn't even talk to me. he just grunts and expects me to put out whenever he wants it.' y/n answered in an irritated tone. 'i just wish he'd talk to me. like you and me. we talk for hours.'
'yeah well y/n, you know how some guys are. he's just like, a, a blip! he can be a blip or the brightest light in your life and it's up to you to decide which one. so, are you gonna dump him?' debbie asked.
'i don't know. i just know i can't even stand him right now.'
the girls went back to y/n's house for the night and sam left for his on the corner of the main road. the girls entered y/n's room and sat down on the bed, tired from the long day. posters and a record player in the corner complimented the soft glow of the yellow light. the moon was shining through the white lace curtains and the soft breeze was creeping through as y/n's parents could be heard in the lounge with a buddy holly record on, laughing and drinking cocktails.
'i wish my parents were like yours.' debbie said in a dreamy tone.
'what do you mean?' y/n looked at her best friend confused.
'you know. i wish my parents actually liked each other instead of pretending to.' debbie yawned before lying down and snuggling into the pillow. y/n sat there for a minute, thinking over everything. did she really like danny? or was she forced into a relationship by the other girls at school? she shook her head slightly and turned on her side, closing her eyes. she fell asleep to the sound of her best friend's soft snores and the hum of her parents' record player.
the next morning, the girls walked down to the football field and sat with the girls from school. there was victoria, cheryl and tracy. the boys were practicing and playing football to prepare for a big, upcoming game in a month. the five girls sat there in the hot june sun, sweating and squinting their eyes, watching their boyfriends make all these touchdowns or whatever.
'what's up with you and danny?' victoria looked over to y/n. debbie gave a look to y/n and she simply rolled her eyes.
'nothing.' she answered briefly, not wanting to elaborate any further. the girls just shrugged and pulled out a packet of virginia slims, passing it around. as the five sat and smoked their cigarettes, y/n was staring at danny, running over to one of the other boys and she couldn't help but feel a pit of dread in her stomach. eventually, she made a deal with herself; if danny pulled one more stupid move, he was out. she was giving him another chance.
the boys came back in, sweating and starving. the girls walked over with their sweat towels to pat the sweat off and some burgers from the nearby diner. y/n walked over to danny hesitantly. he gave her a look of subtle surprise. y/n was surprised that she was doing this. danny almost snatched the burger out of her hands.
'how's the training going? saw you runnin some laps. you're real fast.' y/n tried to initiate conversation.
'yeah it's alright, bit hot.' danny replied briefly. y/n rolled her eyes and walked over to debbie, sitting down with a huff. debbie rested her head on y/n's shoulder and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.
'you'll be ok.' debbie said quietly. y/n just smiled a little and looked over to danny, seeing him goofing off with the other boys.
'what if i'm not? what if i don't even like him?' y/n muttered to debbie, hoping that the other girls or worse, the boys didn't hear her.
'then screw him. screw everyone. it's you and me against the world y/n.' debbie giggled and the two began laughing. the rest of the group just looked over and gave them weird stares but they could care less.
as the sun began to set, everyone made their way home. debbie and y/n walked with each other, pinkies linked like they had done since they were 6. walking along the street, with a blazing orange sky and the warm air. once the two had to go opposite directions, they hugged and said goodbye.
y/n got home and her parents were having a cup of tea and watching tv in the living room. she greeted them, heading to the kitchen to grab some milk and cookies before returning to her room. once she had shut the door, she stripped down and changed into her summer pyjamas, opened her window to let the hot air out and flopped down on to her bed, pulling out an old magazine to read. she eventually gave up on reading articles about '10 new hairstyles to try this spring' and got off her bed, making her way over to her window. the sun had almost set and the sight was gorgeous. she grabbed her old digital camera from her desk and took a photo. not long after, her parents came in and said goodnight before they returned to their tv show and winstons.
y/n laid there in bed, thinking over and over about what to do about danny. sure, her deal might work but what if she's stuck with him as her 'light of her life'. she really did not want that. but she didn't wanna be kicked out of the 'popular group' because she was single. and she didn't want to be alone. the longer she milled over this, the more restless she got. eventually, y/n got up, put her clothes and shoes back on before sneaking out her window and over to danny's. she needed clarity or at least needed to talk to him.
she arrived at danny's door. he opened it, surprised to see y/n but somehow still had that condescending essence. he let her in and they went to his room. she sat down as danny lit a cigarette up.
'what are you doing here? you wanna fuck?' he asked bitterly.
'no. ok, i don't know, i just wanted to talk.' y/n grew less and less confident every minute that passed. danny scoffed.
'about what?'
'you're always shitty to me. have i done something wrong? i just wanna clear it up.' y/n said.
'fucks sake. you women don't stop nagging and nagging. look, everything is fine, ok? now could you please leave, you're really pissing me off.' danny began to raise his voice, standing up and pointing the door. y/n stood up walked over to danny and got in his face.
'you're an asshole.' she whispered before walking out and back home.
when she got home, she quietly climbed through the window. her parents hadn't noticed she had left. she once more, stripped and put on her pyjamas, returning to bed, still unsure of where she stood with danny and feeling more confused than ever.
meanwhile, 5 blocks away, peter parker was sitting in bed, hiding from his aunt may; she had been bugging him about his internship with stark industries and he really didn't feel like talking. he was underneath his covers, reading an old comic his best friend, ned leeds had given him.
when the sound of whatever reality show may was watching stopped, peter assumed his aunt had gone to bed. pulling on his old converse and a jacket, he snuck out through his window and wandered the streets, trying to find comfort in anything he could. he gazed at the stars as he walked by houses with lit up windows. windows to perfect families in their perfectly adequate suburban homes. families that were full. of people. he loved may but there was always going to be a whole in his heart after losing his parents and his uncle ben. one that may never be filled.
