They emerged from the dust and rocks to find themselves in a field of blue grass and purple flowers, the soft breeze tossing them around playfully.
Wiping dust off her cloak, Linh took a ragged breath.
They had made it.
A small whoop of joy escaped from her lips. Linh turned to Marella, and saw her smiling too.
Linh threw off her cloak exposing the black tee-shirt and leggings that were underneath. She spread her arms, and felt the warmth wrap around them. Linh had almost forgotten what sunlight felt like. She felt arms wrap around her waist and lift her into the air.
Linh gave a little startled yelp that turned into a laugh as Marella spun her around in the air. But Marella's petite frame couldn't hold Linh up for long and soon they were both laughing as Linh toppled on top of Marella and they both fell to the ground in a heap.
"Oops," Marella said and linh chuckled, resting her head on Marella's chest. They listened to the sound of birds chirping above for a bit, feeling the grass under their skin and the sun on their faces before Linh craned her neck and planted a kiss on Marella's cheek. She saw a blush making it's way across her friend's face. Afraid that she'd gone too far, Linh started to pull back but Marella lifted her head until her lips met Linh's and kissed her back.
After they had separated and layed in the grass, soaking up all the sunlight they missed, when Marella said:
"WE should probably get going. The Neverseen will try to try to find us; we know too much for their liking."
Right.
That.
All Linh's worries and fears seemed hundreds of years away in this meadow. With the warm sun, and the cool breeze, and the birds. And Marella, she admitted to herself. Whenever Linh was with Marella she was just happy. At peace.
But Marella was right. They had to get moving, the Neverseen could be looking for them right that very moment. That, of course, brought up another question.
"So...where do we go?" Linh asked.
"Uhhh..." Marella replied uncertainty. Linh scanned her surroundings. There was meadow as far as the eye could see in all directions. She spun in a 360 degree circle, trying to see if she missed anything.
Meadow...meadow...meadow...more mead-wait.
"Do you see that?" Linh asked Marella, pointing to the west. Where the ground and the sky blurred into one, and if she really squinted, Linh thought she might be able to see the faint outline of big buildings stacked up against one another.
After a second of searching, Marella exclaimed, "Ooh! Yes! It might be Eternailia or something. Linh, we're going home!"
Linh whooped in agreement, grabbed Marella's hand and together they started off to buildings that awaited them on the horizon.
-----
The closer they got to the town, the less enthusiastic they became. A dark grey haze hung over it, and, the closer the two got, the more it smelled of garbage and gasoline. Marella was the one to voice what they were both thinking.
"Well, this is definitely not Eternailia," she huffed and crested yet another hill. Linh gulped. Where were they? How were they going to get back to the Lost Cities?
Linh and Marella walked for fifteen more minutes in silence before reaching the outskirts of the city.
Linh noticed a big sign that stood taller than the other buildings. On it there was a big peach and the words "Atlanta, Georgia; Welcome To The Pig Peach!"
