The two twelve-year-old children walk through the woods, kicking over rocks and picking up leaves. Well, it's more of one of them doing that. The other is keeping to herself with huge eyes as she timidly follows her friend.
"Don't you think maybe we should... head home? This place seems kinda scary." The timid girl shivers, looking at the thick trees all around.
Her friend punches her in the arm and laughs. "Oh please! You'll be fine Mizuki. Just because this area was burned down forever ago doesn't mean there's ghosts or anything." He claims.
Mizuki's eyes widen even more and her feet come to a halt. "H-Haru! Do-don't say that!"
Haru hears his friends worries and smirks, turning around to walk backwards while wiggling his fingers near her face, staring into her eyes. "I bet people died here."
This makes Mizuki shriek and duck down into a ball, covering her head with her hands.
Haru rolls his eyes and places his foot on Mizuki's shoulder, tapping her. "I'm only joking. It was probably just the butt of a cigarette that made a leaf catch on fire. My dad said it only burned for a night and there weren't any signs of remains of people." He sighs.
But then Haru furrows his brows and thinks of something. "Wait a minute. If there was a big fire then wouldn't the bones also burn away and stuff? So technically they wouldn't know-" He stops his words when he sees poor Mizuki begin shaking even more.
"I'm only kidding! Nobody died here. Trust me."
Accepting Haru's words, Mizuki opens her eyes slowly, but they shoot open all the way when she sees two shiny objects right below her. "Hey, what's this?"
Haru crouches down as well and looks at what his friend is pointing at. The boy immediately gains a smile and plops onto his butt, moving a few leaves to the side to reveal two rings.
"Hey, that's pretty cool Mizuki! How'd ya find that?"
Mizuki sits on her knees and grabs both of them, looking closely as she wipes away the metal on her skirt to clean it up. "I dunno. I just saw it there. They're pretty though." She whispers.
The girl then raises them closer to her eyes and a smile grows on her face. "Hey! Look at this, Haru! They've got a sun and a moon in them. Like our names!"
Haru gasps and looks as well, the same wide smile. "Woah! This is so cool! How 'bout we each have one!"
His idea immediately makes Mizuki nod her head and he hands him the ring with the moon. "Here, you have the moon since that's what my name means. And I'll have the sun, cause that's what your name means. So it'll be like we always have each other no matter where we are."
Haru laughs and slips it down his finger, although it dangles considering it's too big. "You're so smart, I swear. I never would have thought of that." Mizuki blushes at his compliment and gently holds it in her hand, wondering just who could have owned such beautiful rings.
Then Haru gasps and shoves it in his pocket. "I wonder if we can find some more stuff! There's gotta be somethin' right? Maybe even a treasure chest!" He excitedly starts digging through the dirt.
Mizuki scoots a bit away and watches him dig eagerly. "Ooh! Maybe we can find money and become rich!"
As he digs, she watches with high hopes. The thought of finding treasure is one that every kid dreams of. So it'd be insane to actually find something.
And suddenly, Haru hits something.
"TREASURE!" They both yell at the same time, Mizuki now joining in with the eager digging.
As they dig, they see that it's some sort of metal box. It's sealed shut by tape but doesn't have a lock. And when Haru pulls it out, it isn't too big. It's actually pretty small.
As Haru weighs it in his hands, he raises the corner of his lip and scratches his head. "What the heck, it's like air." He whines.
Mizuki grabs it from his hands and is also very surprised when it does indeed feel extremely light. But still, she's very intrigued. "Do you wanna open it? Or should I?" She asks, beginning to gently use her nails to take off the tape.
Haru looks at her face and lightly blushes. "Nah, it's alright. It's your birthday, so you should open. Think of it as a gift from me!" He laughs.
Mizuki also blushes and nods her head, taking off the tape completely before eagerly ripping the box open. When she does so, she sees a folded up piece of paper.
"Come here, let's read it together." She coaxes. Haru listens and shifts so he's right beside her, watching her dirty hands gently lift the old paper.
"Alright."
My dear Y/N,
I've never actually written a letter before... so I guess you're the first to get one from me. And if I'm being honest, I'm really nervous. But you can probably tell that by my handwriting. My hand is shaking really bad.
But this letter is really important to me. I'm really scared but I don't want to hide it anymore. I like you. I like you even more than just liking. I've felt like this for a long time. I used to think it was just a crush, because I think I've always been infatuated with you in some way, but it's more than that.
When you get this letter, you should be at the end of the scavenger hunt that I made for you. I hope you like the food that I left. But when you're done reading this, head to Ichiraku's and tell me.
But if you never read this... well, I guess I'll know because you won't come to Ichiraku's Ramen. I'm going to order your favorite while I'm waiting too, so hurry back before it gets cold.
And I know that we're young, but I'm certain that I feel this way. Everything about you is perfect. The secrets of your arm that I don't know a thing about, the way that you throw your arms around me whenever you see me. You were my first real best friend. And I'll never forget that.
But yes, if you're wondering, this is a love letter. I'm writing this to tell you I love you. Every morning I wake up and immediately think of you. And you also appear in my head every evening as I fall asleep. Sometimes it feels like it's an addiction... an addiction to love, I guess.
You just make everything easier for me. Even when I'm broken, you pick up my pieces and glue me back together. I even cried in front of you and didn't feel ashamed. I trust you a lot. A lot more than anyone else.
I also want to say that I'm sorry. I've never been good at vocalizing how I feel, but I'm sorry for ripping up and making fun of you for your letter to Obito. I guess you could say that I was jealous... because I was. I thought you were going to give that letter to me instead. But I was wrong, and I understand how hard it was to even write that letter. My hands are still shaking.
But I guess this is my official confession. I love you, Y/N. And happy fourteenth birthday. I hope to see you at Ichiraku's.
Love, Kakashi
