Wilbur, upon opening one eye and hazily seeing the time to be somewhere around 5 am, frustratedly turned back over onto his front and buried his head in his pillow. The wind would occasionally whip his drapes away and let the sun blind him for a moment, then it disappeared once again behind them.
He pressed up from the bed and flung one part of his duvet away from him, he swung his legs and they landed square on the floor. Without hesitation, he stood and walked towards the window, still squinting harshly. However, the weight of his hasty awakening and sleep deprivation hit him like truck. His vision blurred and his knees buckled. The window sill acted as his saviour; he clung to it and dragged himself up, letting out a sigh as he propped himself up on his elbows.
The view outside his window had become to look stale to him, nonetheless, he pushed himself up to a stand. A timid knock came on his chambers door;
"Your royal highness, are you alright?" The high-pitched voice of a maid asked.
"Yes, thank you, I'm fine." Wilbur replied, a tinge of exasperation in his voice.
"Can't they just leave me alone..." He muttered to himself.
Wilbur stumbled through his walk in wardrobe and emerged a short while later wearing a soft, white tunic and brown breeches.
He checked his journal and it seemed he had the day off today.
'With both Techno and Tommy away it's going to be really quiet around here...'
In one respect, he was right.
Wilbur raced down the spiral staircase; his footsteps echoed loudly and his fingers traced the smooth banister as he went. Immediately he pushed open the wooden double doors at the bottom. They met one of the many long corridors that ran along the length of the main building.
During the day, these halls stand mostly empty, the servants who need not be seen can sneak through some of the servants corridors that fit between the walls and appear wherever is needed, Wilbur knew this of course, one day this would be his castle after all.
Wilbur stepped through the doors and suddenly stopped in his tracks, recoiling and leaning his weight on the wall; a small huddle of maids stood over something. He could not quite make out what, in fact, they were so enamoured by it they didn't even notice he was there.
"Excuse me." Wilbur tried to say quietly, though his deep voice was more than enough to rouse the young maids. In an instant they had all turned around and were gawking at the prince who loomed over them like a cat that decides what to do with its prey.
"Well, what is it, what are you all looking at?"
The looks of shock plastered on their faces soon turned to dread as a few peeled away from the group and fled while only a couple remained to reveal the object they were originally staring at.
A small, delicate wooden clock was presented with a tiny crack in the glass of its face and a couple scratches on the wood.
"That is all?" The two girls nodded their heads vigorously, then curtsied and bowed their heads at the same time. "You know what? Wilbur studied their faces and made a conscious attempt to remember them. "You both deserve a reward, for staying when all of your friends left."
They both rose and looked him in the eye, then each other, then back to Wilbur. The previous worried look they bore slowly faded, though they tried their best not to seem excited.
"May I know your names?" Wilbur asked politely.
"Grace, Your Royal Highness." One chirped up, and the other followed, "And Jules, Your Royal Highness."
"Considering I shall someday be king, I might as well try to become somewhat familiar with the people who live under my roof. You may go now."
They hurried off, Wilbur knew they were smiling, even though their faces were indecipherable from behind. He glanced along the corridor, surveying his surroundings properly this time, though to his slight dismay, he found them to be deserted.
'I guess I scared them off.'
