Many nobles from families across the capital came; it was to be a fine occasion.
It had been a while since a celebration, so folk across the land were eager to get a glance of the royal family, even if only brief. They would always put on a short show for some selected citizens - something they themselves hated, but everyone else seemed to like it enough, so it became custom.
The palace itself was bustling with people. While Phil had not seen it, from Wilbur's frequent letters, he was kept up to date. Even as king, Phil requested to see his people on his way home, so the parade he headed passed through a couple towns before making straight for the capital.
On horseback he lead his people - it was partly a display of power, however Phil much more enjoyed seeing his citizens faces light up, even if there were two behind them, scowling at him. He knew it would always be like this, but he continued on regardless.
The detour had meant they would not arrive until much later than anticipated. Phil felt slightly bad as this would most definitely have scuppered many a plan but he had bigger things to worry about now: his speech.
While it had already been written for him, Phil still felt that sinking feeling in his stomach hat something would go wrong, and he frowned as he passed through the surrounding houses outside the walls.
Although, he quickly put back up his kingly facade as he passed by row after row of small shops lining the high streets and houses where hundreds upon hundreds of people were pouring out of. They swiftly lined the streets with various guards there to hold them back as they looked on the parade with expectant gazes.
Little had been heard about the surrounding kingdoms officially for quite some time, so naturally, rumours spread. Everyone was hungry for even a snippet of the truth.
Soon, the outer walls began to loom over them, along with the setting sun. Phil's emerald green robes and the similar drape on his horse shone in the golden light. People everywhere shouted, cheered, booed; it was a lot to take in.
The huge wooden and iron gate began to swing slowly open as they approached, it creaked and moaned loud enough for people miles away to hear but with some help, finally stood still. Light briefly blinded Phil as he attempted to spot someone he recognised through the gap. This soon passed and three figures emerged
They held themselves up high upon their horses, who took a couple steps forward.
The person on the left had the smallest stature of the three who up until spotting Phil had clearly been trying to hide his boredom. He wore a cape covering one shoulder. He was adorned with many jewels which he always wore reluctantly, this time being no exception, however his crown was missing this time too.
Tommy's face lit up seeing his father and he attempted to move his horse forward, but was stopped by Wilbur in the centre who wore a blue jacket golden buttons and shoulders with tassels. A large red sache finished it off along with a large crown which he seemed to struggle a bit under the weight of.
Techno completed the trio of brothers and wore a slightly more impressive version of his usual attire; the cape, the crown, the glistening diamond sword at his hip, however he also boasted a jacket which seemed to be there mostly as a way to display the many medals he had won in combat.
The medals jangled as he took his horse forward slightly, beckoning the others to do the same.
Tommy was the first one to call out, this time too quick for Wilbur to stop his horse from trotting towards the King. "Father! It's been so long."
Smilies stretched out across both of their as they brought their horses close enough to each other, so that Phil could give Tommy a hearty pat on the shoulder. "It's great to be back." Phil said warmly.
Wilbur and Techno soon followed with Techno simply smiling and nodding, which Phil echoed back. While Wilbur said,"Thank goodness you're back, I can't believe I've had these two running a muck and having to deputise at the same time."
Phil chuckled at that. "I can imagine, especially this one here:" He gestures to Techno, then moved over and punched him lightly in the arm."He's always getting himself into fights."
"Hey! That's quite literally my job!" Techno replied, feigning a shocked face and looking between everyone rapidly.
Wilbur shattered the light atmosphere as he suggested they continue to the palace. Everyone nodded in agreement, there would be a better place to catch up anyway.
A great many people had been stood watching this, so they had at least given the people what they wanted.
:)
The four turned around and saved the crowds that had gathered within the walls and packed the streets. Many, many members of the royal guard had been posted to crowd control that day, all to keep the bulging streets at bay.
With the King at the helm they moved forward with a great number of soldiers and personnel behind them. Three out the four waved as they went by, Techno always remaining more stoic than the rest. Tommy seemed to have perked up a bit; he eagerly swung one arm around like a toddler, but with slightly more grace.
He had become much more popular lately, especially amongst the younger generation. Children loved to see him as the rambunctious prince who had it all, though the older folk saw that as something that made him all the annoying.
The cheering citizens where mostly docile, however there was always one who didn't follow suit. A small man dressed simply, mostly likely one of the working class slithered under the arm of one of the guards and quickly made for the head of the parade, the King.
He ducked past another guard for the royals themselves and had one hand clutching something at his waist, a silver glint flashing his intent to those nearby.
Phil had realised quickly enough to rear his horse, but still too slow to do anything decisive.
The man had lifted his head, looked to sky, and said: "Death to the King!" as he fully revealed his dagger and began to raise it.
Although, just a moment before he could strike , his face contorted in pain and his knees buckled, his knife only able to lightly cut through part of the King's cape.
As the now criminal fell to the floor, a large blood stain forming across his back. The man who stood over him was none other the Prince Techno.
His sword was held loosely in his hand, resting on the floor and he was breathing heavily with panic strewn across his face.
The crowd was silent.
"All is well!" Phil shouted out, to calm the people.
A few sighs of relief were heard along with cheering for the King's saviour: Techno
He leaned on his sword and an attendant came over to help him adjust his crown to be straight .
Wilbur rode over to Techno as he was climbing back on his horse. "You alright Techno? "
"Yeah, uhh that was just a really close call, that's all."
Tommy chimed in with,"I'll be honest, I don't know what to think anymore."
"We will have to ramp up security a lot, that's my fault I suppose.." Techno grumbled.
Phil leant over and gave Techno a comforting pat the shoulder, though this just made him jump and turn to look at Phil who said," It's alright son, we just have to make sure it does not happen again.
Techno nodded.
Meanwhile, Phil was determined to not let this small incident delay things further. So, he led them onwards once again, this time with more guards and they were going at a trot.
**
Soon enough, the palace gates were in sight, the sun had begun to set, illuminating the princes and Phil as they went.
Phil sent off a message to move his announcement to the following day, it was a disappointment, but an understandable one for most people. Other public arrangements were also postponed, the family needed something time to catch up, and maybe some sleep too...
