(kel pov)
Ok kel! You finally got Sunny out of his house after four years of almost non-stop trying. Don't screw it up. I inhale, and notice I grabbed his hand out of instinct. Good going genius, you already probably freaked him out! I quickly let go and immediately start on the route to Hobeez. We pass my house, with Hector playing and barking in the yard. I catch Sunny smiling for a moment, and he reaches his hand down to pet my dog. Hector sniffs his hand, decides he's safe enough and licks his fingers. "Hector, c'mon! You know Sunny's not a fan of licking..." I give him a bonk on the head, light enough that I don't hurt him, of course, but I think he gets the point.
"Thanks..." Sunny says, quiet as can be. He squats down and scratches the dog's head. He smiles, probably thinking about something to himself. He's always done that, but that seems to be about all that stayed the same since I last saw him. He looks much more tired, and drastically skinnier. I wonder if he's been eating... probably not. I should invite him to dinner tonight, I note. Though knowing me, I'll probably forget. I should ask him now, but what if he doesn't want to? He'll probably feel so awkward that he'd run away to his house again, just like before. I can't have that happen.
Sunny stands from petting Hector, and we start walking once again. It's now that I realize I don't know what to say to him-- We haven't seen each other in so long that I have no clue what he's interested in, no clue what we have in common anymore. Well, you've gotta start somewhere, right? We were friends then, so why not now? Not that much has changed... has it?
"So what have you been up to?" I ask him, struggling a bit to keep his pace. He walks surprisingly fast, for someone who hasn't been out in years. "Do you still draw? You used to have a sketchbook, right?"
All I get is a small nod in return. Is he uncomfortable? Well if he wasn't before, he will be now... I smile, trying to shove down the sheer awkwardness of the situation. We pass by the park and I spot two of my friends on the court. I wave and smile at them, but they don't seem to have noticed me. I turn back to Sunny, who's looking down at the ground silently. Is he upset? Should I not have said hi to them?
I wish I could see into his head. I wish I could know what he wanted to hear right now, what he was thinking earlier with Hector, what he was thinking when we were still at his house. What he's been doing, why he's been inside for so long, why he didn't hear me knocking on his door every day. But I have yet to gain psychic abilities. And so, the silence continues.
We make it to Hobbeez and I notice that he throws a dollar into the case of the guitarist who lives around here. I never thought to do that... he's so caring. I forgot that about him.
We head into the hobbeez, and begin looking for a gift for Hero. We head to the comic section, where I find an old volume of Captain Spaceboy. Yes! Perfect! We loved this series as kids! "Sunny, look!" I hold up the book for him to see, but he's staring into a poster on the wall. It's for some movie called 'Jackson', and has a picture of a character with chainsaws for hands. Probably a horror movie. "I wouldn't have pegged you for a horror kinda guy, Sunny!" I say, laughing a bit. Sunny doesn't move an inch. "hellooooo, Sunny? are you in there?" I wave my hand in front of his face. Prolly imagining a whole fight scene with this dude... I'm joking, of course, but if I'm being honest I don't think it's totally impossible.
Sunny keeps looking at the poster, and nothing I do seems to change that, so I move over to the book section. Let's see... no... no... ew, who put this here? I move the... unpleasant book over to the shelf where it's supposed to be when I notice the book next to it. Ah, here we go!
"Kel?" I turn to see Sunny standing behind me. "Why... are you looking at that?"
I follow his gaze to the book I found earlier, and I feel my face heat up. "Oh, Sunny!! I didn't see you there..." I laugh, trying to shake off Sunny's sudden appearance at the worst possible moment. I clear my throat and grab the book for Hero. "I was looking at this! 'Papa chip's chip-off-the-old-block cookbook'! Pretty cool, huh?" I grin, happy I could change the topic. "Hero will love this!! Now then, let's check out and get this home!"
Sunny ended up having to pay.
