Niccolo knew his parents meant well, yet it was so frustrating every time they would ramble on about marriage. The girl has to be pretty, and of good class, and kind. But not once did they mention love, they didn't care whether Niccolo loved her or not.
Niccolo opened his eyes, greeted with rays of sunlight peaking through his curtains. He got up and changed into his regular attire, but making sure to brush out his golden hair since there was some important military business meeting to attend. They said that they were choosing the soldiers to go to Paradis Island, a place of devils, the rumours said. He scoffed, and hoped, even with his not-so-good luck, that he wouldn't be chosen to get on that boat.

Typical, he thought. It's not that he minded that he was chosen, but he didn't really like the idea of spending, god knows how many months there. And so, he quickly rushed to his parents to tell them the news. Play it cool, he thought. He began by chopping up some vegetables to make a stew, and decided he would tell them over dinner. One by one, he poured the spices and add-ins to the boiling froth. He enjoyed cooking, it truly was his passion. He believed a good meal was the way to someones heart. If he was ever truly to find love, it would have to be someone who appreciated his cooking, at the very least. Niccolo stirred the stew until it was ready and poured it into some bowls, and then carefully carried them to the table. His mother, father, and older brother were sat there.
"About time, son. I'm starving," His father cried, quickly taking a bowl and spooning it into his mouth.
"Yes, dear. My gut tells me that something bad happened in the meeting today, would you like to share it?" His mother said. She had always been kinder than her husband. Niccolo was about to explain when his brother, Pierre, interrupted him.
"Oi, is it really that important? Look at you Nicco, you're all grown up now, and you're spending your time shooting guns. C'mon now! You've got to get married! You have to move on with your life, what happened that that dream of yours, becoming the worlds best chef or somethin'?"
Niccolo finally spoke up.
"My ambitions are none of your concern, brother, and you can tell me to get married after you, 3 years older than me, get married yourself! Now, speaking of the military, yes, an unfortunate turn of events happened. You see, they are taking a ship to, to P-Paradis Island, and I have been one of the soldiers selected to go on that ship. I don't know how long it will be for, but it is an order, and I must leave within this season."
His mother was wide-eyed, his father was ready to cry, and his brother look more concerned about the first sentence.
"No! You can't go to that filthy island where those disgusting spawns of satan roam. As your father I won't allow it!" His father shouted, and a silence crossed the room.
"Nicco, dearest, if it is mandatory, then you shall go. However, don't forget what those devils have done to us, don't forget your morals, and please, come back to us," His mother spoke.
It was set then, he would leave, do what has to be done, and then return, a hero.
He won't expect to find anything good there, but maybe he shall.
