Loki had snuck Bucky's phone to bed with him in the pocket of his sweatpants. He felt it vibrate against his leg at around 2 AM. He pulled it out and looked at it. It was Steve telling him Rumlow was in the process of busting out a couple dangerous HYDRA prisoners. He looked at Bucky as he slept. He knew this trip to HQ would be dangerous for Bucky... He bit his lip and slowly slipped out of bed. Loki grabbed Bucky's gun. He gently kissed his forehead before he snuck out the door and downstairs. He closed his eyes and turned himself into Bucky. He headed out the door and got in Bucky's car. He took a deep breath before driving to SHIELD.
When Loki arrived, he found busted out windows and there was gunshots going off. He snuck around and used the back entrance. He only remembered this for the last time he was here when he was getting checked up on by Thor. He shook his head to clear his mind and pulled the gun out. He snuck in and found himself in the prison area. There was a tall HYDRA agent trying to crack the code on a cell. Loki bit his lip and aimed the gun at him before pulling the trigger. The bullet hit him in the neck and he dropped to his knees. Loki walked over and smirked at the prisoner in the cell. That is, until the prisoner smirked back at him. Loki felt a sharp pain in his back and sank to his knees. He felt his magic fade and he blacked out as he heard Steve's voice.
"Bucky!"
---
Steve shot the agent that had stabbed Bucky. He turned to help his friend, but didn't find Bucky lying there. He found Loki. He looked down at the trickster. His cheeks looked sunken. His skin had turned an odd color. He bit his lip, "Dammit." Steve shook his head. If only he had gotten here a few seconds faster, Loki would still be alive. He bit his lip. How had this happened? Steve looked closer and found Bucky's phone in Loki's pocket. Loki must've taken the mission without Bucky knowing... He felt his heart sink as he realized he'd have to tell Bucky. He heard a scream and sighed as he took off to help the SHIELD agent that had yelled.
Once the coast was clear and SHIELD had beat back HYDRA, Steve returned to the prison area. Loki still laid there. Loki was still dead. Steve wished it was all just a nightmare. He bit his lip and called Loki's phone from Bucky's. He didn't hear a phone ring nearby so Bucky must've had the other phone.
--
Bucky was asleep until he heard Loki's phone go off. He groaned when he realized Loki wasn't in bed with him. He saw whoever was calling had his phone. "Hey..." Bucky answered. He was half asleep, "Loki, where are you, and where did you put my damn phone?"
Steve bit his lip, "Bucky, it's Steve."
"Why do you have my phone?" Bucky asked. He sat up on his bed.
"Long story... It seems Loki took your phone, disguised himself as you, and came to help so you weren't put in any danger..." Steve began to explain.
Bucky couldn't believe what he was hearing. He bit his lip, "Please tell me Loki is alright..."
"I... I can't tell you that, Buck..." Steve said as he glanced at the body of Loki.
"No..." Bucky breathed out. He felt as if his whole life had just been taken away from him. In a way, it was. Loki was Bucky's life. Loki was his reason to smile everyday. Now that's he's gone... No longer would Bucky be able to smile.
"I'm sorry-" Was all Bucky heard Steve say before he hung up on him. He threw his face down in the pillows and began to sob. He felt his chest rattle and shake as he took a breath in. He felt the pillow become wet from his tears. He growled and threw the pillow across the room. He began punching holes in the walls whenever his metal fist met the drywall. He nearly ripped out his own hair. He stumbled downstairs and got a beer out of the fridge. He popped off the top and took a drink of it. Bucky tasted a bit of saltiness from weeping. He felt his right arm trembling from the sorrow he was experiencing. He staggered over to the couch and sat down. He sat the bottle down on the coffee table and put his face in his hands. How could he go on without the love of his life? The one that taught him how to love? He shook his head and slumped over onto the couch. He sat there and wondered what he should do.
--
Steve had a group of people come to collect Loki's body. He led them down the steps to where Loki's body was. The only problem was the fact that Loki's body wasn't there. The pool of blood was there, but that was it.
"What?" Steve said in shock. He looked down at the pool of blood and tilted his head. "Loki was right here five minutes ago..."
"Hm.. That's odd..." One of the guys said and scratched his chin.
Steve tilted his head. He didn't like this. He tried calling Bucky again, but there was no answer.
--
Bucky had left Loki's phone upstairs. He threw it down in a fit of rage. Rage at the world. He sniffed and wiped a tear from his cheek before going to take another drink.
"Really, Barnes? You're going to do the stereotypical drunk-because-my-boyfriend-died thing?" A familiar voice asked.
Bucky froze. He nearly choked on his drink. He shook his head, "God, help me. I'm hearing voices..." He looked down at the floor.
"Do I look like a mirage to you?" The voice asked again before a vision of Loki came into Bucky's sight.
Bucky looked up. He felt his skin crawl, "You're not real..." He said, sitting his beer down and rose to his feet.
Loki rolled his eyes, "For Odin's sake, Barnes." He swiftly strode over to Bucky and kissed him. Loki's hand rested on the back of Bucky's neck.
Bucky kissed him back. He felt chills run down his spine. He bit his lip after they broke away from each other. His jaw dropped.
"What's the matter, Winter? You look like you've seen a ghost." Loki smirked.
"You... Steve said..." Bucky said in shock.
Loki laughed. He simply turned around and lifted up the back of his shirt. There was a scar across his lower back where he had gotten stabbed, "Now I know how that one agent I killed a few years ago felt..." Loki turned back around, "How's that for a magic trick?" He smiled, "You just got Loki'd."
Bucky groaned and wrapped his arms around him, "I hate you."
"Hate you, too." Loki laughed.
Bucky felt tears streaming down his face, but these were tears of joy. He kissed Loki's cheek and mumbled, "Don't do that ever again..."
"I don't want to get stabbed in the back again, so I don't think I'll try that again anytime soon." Loki chuckled. He jumped when he felt something reaching into his pocket, "Hey!"
"I wanted my damn phone back." Bucky smirked at Loki before stepping away from him.
Loki rolled his eyes, "Could've been a lot less physical about it."
"Oops." Bucky grinned, "Well, I don't know about you, but I'm going back to bed." He stepped towards the stairs.
"I'm right behind you." Loki laughed and followed him.
Bucky laughed awkwardly as they reached the door to the bedroom, "Uh, don't mind the two holes in the wall..." He said and pushed open the door.
"Winter..." Loki sighed and shook his head.
Bucky raised an eyebrow, "I thought I told you to stop calling that."
"I don't think I will." Loki smirked at him.
"Damn you..." Bucky shook his head as he laid down in bed.
Loki got on his side and raised an eyebrow, "What?"
"Go to sleep..." Bucky groaned. He couldn't help but smile.
"Fine. Goodnight, Winter." Loki snickered and kissed his cheek, scooting over into Bucky's arms.
"Goodnight." Bucky yawned with a grin. He was just glad to have his trickster back. He held Loki close before drifting off to sleep.
