7 yrs ago, her final year

Oceane

There are times when you are afraid of your memories. You want to forget all the memories that hurt you and made you cry. In short, you can say you want to forget the bad, dark memories and only remember the good ones. The ones where you laugh, smile and are happy. But then the cruel reality comes crashing down, where you cannot escape those memories, similar to how you cannot run away from the bad times.

Unfortunately, you can say that I don't remember some memories. You ask why? Well, the answer is simple, it's because I had gotten into an accident a few years ago and lost my memories. I have amnesia. I was scared when I could not remember what had happened to me and why I was in the hospital, but then I slowly started to cope with the fact that I could not remember many things. The doctor mentioned that I severely injured my head due to the accident, resulting in memory loss. We tried to know if it was an accident or on purpose, but it indeed was an accident. After a few weeks, I decided to start my life again from scratch.

So here I am, living my new life happily after seven years. I am Oceane Avery Emerson, a crazy teenager of 17, trying her best to live life to the fullest.

"Bitch! Where have you been? Late on your first day of school? I thought I taught you better, Ave!" My best friend, Shea, yells at me, bringing me back to reality.

"Jesus, Shea, I am on time look, we still have five minutes left for the class to start" I roll my eyes at her drama.

"Come on, Ave; we had agreed to come early to school this year!" Shea whines.

"I never agreed to it, though. You guys decided it by yourself, saying, 'You must come early, or you are as good as dead' You both did not even bother to let me talk."

"Oh well.. *ring ring* oh can u hear the bell, we gotta go, girl." my best friend pulls me. She is so clever!

"Where is the second person who suggested this award-winning idea?" I ask her. "Uh... I don't know, he might have come very early, so-"

"Hey, guys! I am here" Isaac comes, panting as if he just ran a marathon.

I fold my arms and stare at him. "So the guy who decided to come ve-e-ery early to school and threatened me if I did otherwise is late. How ironic, isn't it, Shea?" I ask her in a sweet voice.

"Well, you see, my dear, there was heavy traffic on the way here."

"Isaac, you literally walk to school every day. What traffic are you talking about?"

"Guys, we are getting late, so why don't we just go to our classes, yeah?" Shea says.

"Thank God I am saved," Isaac mumbles under his breath, but I hear it clearly.

"Did you say something, Cooper?"

"Me? saying? No, no, you probably heard wrong, my dear. Let's go." Isaac chuckles nervously and walks away as fast as possible.

I smile and shake my head. Unfortunately, poor Isaac always falls in trouble with me. I actually wasn't angry or anything; I knew he would be late. I was just having fun teasing my poor best friend.

"Let's go girl, we have physics first. What a way to ruin our day!" Shea grumbles.

"More like a way to ruin our first day of last year!" I reply. Shea laughs and agrees. With this, we walk into the first class of our last year. You see, we both hate this subject and of course, our teacher makes us hate it more.

------------

It is lunchtime now. I walk to our usual cafeteria table, where I find Shea and Isaac sitting already. I reach the table and sit down.

"How was your day?" I ask.

"Tiring"

"Shit"

Both answer together, the former said by Isaac and the latter by Shea. Typical Shea.

"Did you guys know a new student is joining our school?" Shea asks. She knows a lot of things, even things that no one knows. I have no idea how she knows all this. Every time I ask her, she answers, 'I have sources.' I am not surprised she knew something like this.

"Really? Who?" I ask while Isaac is stuffing his mouth with food. He doesn't even pay attention to us and what we are talking about.

"I am not sure. But I know that it's a guy. He will be joining tomorrow."

"Why not today?" Isaac questions; I am surprised that he was actually listening to us.

"You were actually listening?" Shea asks, obviously, not believing it like me. Same girl, same.

"Well, I am not eating with ears, am I, woman? Or do you eat with your ears?" he said in a 'duh' tone.

"What got your knickers in a twist, dude? You usually don't pay attention to our talks while eating food." Shea rolled her eyes. These both start their usual bickering. And the topic of the new boy was soon forgotten. The lunch period passed by with them bickering with each other and me eating peacefully.

The bell rings loudly. We get up from our places, more like Shea and I get up and drag Isaac, who whines about leaving his lunch.

---------------

And just like that, the first day of school passes by in a blur. Shea, Isaac, and I bid our goodbyes and go to our home.

I reach my home and change my clothes. My parents are most of the time not here as my dad is a doctor and my mom does social work and helps the unprivileged, so I am alone at this big house. I do miss my mom and dad, but I understand that they have to work. So I never force them to stay. My mom does call me whenever she gets time and checks how I am doing.

Whenever I am sad and miss them, I always remember what my mom used to say to me when I was young and threw tantrums about my name. I didn't like my name back then. My mom once took me to a beach at night and asked me, "It looks beautiful, doesn't it?" I nodded, mesmerized by the beauty of nature. My mom said, "Just like the moon and the shining surface of the ocean looks beautiful, your name and smile look beautiful on you." After that, I started cherishing my name.

I decide to get some sleep, but unfortunately, I don't get any sleep. I keep tossing and turning to get into a comfortable position. I get up, take my earphones and jacket, wear my shoes and go to a cliff about 10 minutes from my house. It's a place where I can forget about my worries and escape this world for a while. I love to stargaze while listening to songs there.

I stand near the railing while listening to songs and look at the stars. I close my eyes for a moment and feel the wind, and wish, "I want to know more about myself."
