Y/N's POV
"What do you mean no? Of course, we have to go back!"
"For the last time, stop acting so irrational!"
"Irrational?" I scoffed. "So now I'm irrational?"
"Yes!"
"You know what, Thomas? Shut your mouth. You're always the first to tell me I'm wrong when all you do is sit around on your ass all day doing nothing!"
I stopped, taking a deep breath, trying to stop the anger from boiling over.
"I'm going back," I said firmly, turning on my heel toward the door.
"Y/N!... Y/N! Y/N, STOP!" Thomas grabbed my wrist. "You can't go back. I won't let you."
I yanked my arm away and turned to face him.
"Oh, you won't let me? You think you can stop me?"
"If you go back, Gally will kill you," he snapped. "He's already tried once. What's stopping him from trying again, huh?"
I let out a humorless laugh. "Oh, so now you suddenly care? Now it's about protecting me? And here I thought I was just being irrational."
He exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. "Why are you suddenly like this? Of course, I care about you! But lately, you just keep running straight into danger without thinking! That isn't like you."
"Or maybe it is." I shot,  every word dripped with frustration. "I'm sick of being treated like some little girl. I don't need your constant protection, Thomas. I don't need you to save me. I am fine. I can take care of myself."
"Well, obviously not," he shot back, arms crossing over his chest.
I clenched my jaw. "You know what, Thomas? You're the one who's changed."
His expression darkened. "No, don't you dare try to pin this on me—"
"Then tell me," I cut him off, stepping closer. "Are you the man I love, or do you just look like him?"
Silence.
Thomas just stared at me, his mouth slightly open, but no words came out.
I shook my head, the knot in my chest tightening.
"Let me know when you figure it out," I said coldly. "Until then, leave me the hell alone."
I turned to Newt and Minho, both of whom looked incredibly uncomfortable. They clearly didn't want to pick sides.
"So," I exhaled, my voice steady but bitter, "are you coming or not?"
They exchanged a glance, then hesitantly looked at Thomas.
I scoffed.
"Y/N..." Newt started carefully. "Tommy does have a point. It's too dangerous for us to go back. Especially for you."
"Of course, you're taking his side," I muttered under my breath. "What else did I expect?"
"It's not like that," Newt insisted. "You know it's not. We care about you. We almost lost you once—we don't want to lose you for good."
"Yeah. Right."
My chest ached, but I shoved the feeling down.
"You know where to find me," I said before walking out the door.
They called my name.
I didn't turn back.
The Glade was in danger. Our home was in danger. And they just wanted to sit back and do nothing?
I could feel the sting of tears at the corners of my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.
No.
I had to go back.
Even if it cost me my life.
I would figure all of this out. Solve this stupid mystery.
I was done losing.
This wasn't over.
They hadn't seen the last of me.
I took off running down the long halls, my feet hitting the ground in a perfect rhythm.
Every step sent a jolt of satisfaction through my veins, a rush of clarity that made me feel whole.
At least I knew one thing for sure,
I was born to be a Runner.
