"Checkmate," Loki yells in the castle library as the librarian begins shushing him.
"Okay, you win, no need to announce it to the land," I laugh and he laughs too, his laugh filling me with warmth. The kind of joy needed in a day. Yet, something isn't right."Let's go outside," I tell him.
"Only because I keep beating you," he responds. I shake my head, trying to hide my lie, "No, we could just do with some fresh air." He looks at me, showing off his perfect smile. Yet, something isn't right."Let's go outside," I yell him.
"Only because i keep beating you," he responds. I shake my head, trying to hide my lie, "no, we could just do with some fresh air." He looks at me, showing off his perfect smile. Yet, once again, something feels wrong."It's raining," he says as if that's ever changed my mind before, "but okay, i guess, if you want us to get soaked."
He doesn't wait for my response as he rises from his chair and I do the same. I think about what lies in my pocket, almost daring to grab it, but I remind myself - not right now. It would give everything away.
We step through the huge oak library door and down the creepy stairs. We reach the front door and he opens it for me, smiling that suspicious smile. I give it back with chills running up and down my spine. We cross the grounds, walking as far as we can go. I expect him to ask where we're going but he doesn't seem to mind.
We reach the trees and he grabs my hand. His icey cold touch piercing through my sweaty palms. He begins leading me into the forest, finally coming to a halt infront of a magnificent spruce tree.
"You know, I really do like you. It would be a shame if we only ever play chess," he says, locking his eyes with mine. I force my lips to smirk, as though going along with whatever game I was playing.
"Yeah, it would,", I smiled, reaching onto my tiptoes. Making sure to keep my eyes open, I feel his lips press against mine.
I reach into my pocket, finally pulling out a silver dagger. The one my gave gave me all those years ago. I buried it into this skin and whisper, "which is why we should end this game early." This time I was the only smiling, "checkmate."
But something is wrong, the light in his eyes hasn't dimmed. Chils running though my body, I look down at his hands. They rest patently by his side, waiting for me to realise he wasn't in any pain, there was no blood. Then it hits me, the chills running down my back were warm. Warm like blood.
"Do you never learn? I always play smart. All I had to do was wait. I knew you'd give me the chance I'd been looking for soon enough. The chance being your weapon. Your dagger."
I fell to the floor as the world around me began to fade. My heart slowing. "No," I whisper.
"No? I saw your game and made it mine. It was easy, I just has to play along, letting you think it was yours, he chuckled, "I really did like you."
Finally, everything was completely black and I exhaled one last time.
"Checkmate, Y/N"
