"I can't ask you to come with me," Nat said gently.
"Good because I won't," the words were meant to be callous, but they were merely sorrowful. With the threat to her life becoming greater by the second, there was no way she could stay. And there was no way I could go with her.I couldn't leave.
"I'm sorry," Nat apologised, "I've made things difficult enough already."
"Yes," I stated, "yes, you have. You were kind to me, even though you're supposed to be my enemy. You taught me how to fight and sacrifice and you brought me into a dangerous world where I don't belong. For that, I am forever grateful. I am not the girl I was when I met you."Nat sighed, " I don't think there is anything we could have done differently. Been more careful or-"
"No." Every possible version of our story ended in separation. It was as if every part of the universe was intent on ruining our love. And yet, I would do it all over again, a thousand times. "You'll always be a part of me," I said, "all the best parts actually."
"But I want you to move on. Please, don't let yourself be shackled by me. We are too young for our love to be utterly spent."
"I might move on eventually," I sighed, "but even if I end up an old spinster, I will have lived a life I can be proud of. I'm just happy to have shared a part of it with you."
With that, our time was up and we were forced to part. There was always an unspoken pressure placed on last words. But, as memories of our courtship flashed before me, stolen kisses and illicit glances, I felt no sadness.
There were a million coincidences that conspired in our meeting and, though, a happy ending might have required a million more; every moment I had spent with her had been it's own miracle.
I'd been granted true love for one impossible year. I no longer felt the urge to remind her how much I loved her, it was pointless, but a 'thank you lingered on my lips.
She kissed my hand gently. Natasha waited, savouring the moment one last time.
For a while, time seemed to freeze. However, our time soon passed and she faded into the early November morning mist.
Natasha Romanoff had left my life forever, and now only existed in my memory
and a stubborn heart.
