28 Days, 22 Hours, and 37 Minutes Later
(Y/N) layed down on the dirt ground, her hands tucked behind her head to prop it up as Joel and Ellie's soft snores reached her ears. Yes, it was pretty late in the day for them to still be sleeping but (Y/N) decided to cut them some slack after they had taken care of her back in Toronto. Besides, they were mere minutes away from Trenton at this point.
Opening her eyes, (Y/N) stared up at the blue sky in shock. They were mere minutes away from finding out if (Y/N)'s parents had even a chance at being alive. Sucking in a harsh breath, (Y/N) forced herself to sit up, trying to stop her train of thought before it caused anymore anxiety, Shut up, mind, She thought bitterly, reaching into her pocket to grasp the old photo before unfolding it, her eyes memorising each and every detail of it like she had done many times before.
"You okay?" A voice whispered beside her. (Y/N) flinched and gripped onto the photo tighter, nearly crumpling it in her hands as her head whipped over to look at Ellie who had just woken up, "Fuckin' hell...." She whispered under her breath as Ellie sat up, waiting for her answer, "M'fine." (Y/N) replied before shoving the picture back into her pocket. Ellie raised a sassy brow at her and gave her a look, "You never look at that photo just for shits and giggles, (Y/N)."
"Are you having second thoughts?" Ellie asked, crossing her legs as she kept her gaze on (Y/N). (Y/N) looked back at her without hesitation before letting out a sigh, shrugging, "What if there was a reason?" (Y/N) finally asked, causing Ellie to give her a confused look, "What?" (Y/N) ran a hand through her hair and looked away, her thoughts moving on to darker places, "What if they lost me on purpose? And this whole trip is just me trying to get back to someone who never wanted me in the first place?"
"Yeah, I get that." Ellie spoke up, digging a small hole in the dirt with her finger, "My mom died when I was just a baby and I never knew my father. I grew up in a god damn military quarantine zone until I was 13." Ellie explained, "Then I got bit and Joel was given the job to take me to the Fireflies." She said before shrugging, "I've wanted to look for my Dad, my real Dad, but I have no where to start, no pictures, no towns."
"I don't know where I'm going with this." Ellie mumbled, causing (Y/N) to chuckle in amusement, "But even if we can't find them. I know that I'd like keep you around a little bit longer. I always wanted a big sister." Ellie said, mumbling the last part under her breath so that
(Y/N) wouldn't hear it. (Y/N) looked away, trying very hard to suppress her smile, very clearly hearing Ellie's comment. She would be lying if she said that she didn't feel the same way.
