Hi guys,

So this is my new story. Just a quick warning, things will look bleak in the beginning and there will be a few depictions of violence, but it will get better. Enjoy! 🙂

Elena's PoV

"Alaric is dead!"

Caroline's voice is trembling. Even through the phone, I can still tell she is crying. But I realize that only on the side. My heart is writhing, screaming in pain. My legal guardian is dead. The last parent figure I had is gone. Some part of me has trouble believing it.

"What?" I quietly ask.

Caroline audibly draws a breath before she answers. "He went to the counsil meeting to discuss the Klaus situation. He's been killing far too many people recently. And then suddenly, Klaus himself appeared. Somehow he found a way to enter the building without being invited in. He killed them, all of them."

I know what that means. Alaric. Carol Lockwood, Tyler's mother. Pastor Young, April's father. And many others.

"Wait, what about your Mom? Care, was she there too??"

"No, thank god she wasn't. You know Klaus already forced her to support him when he had Tyler bite me. As much as I hated him for doing that, right now I couldn't be more relieved about it. It means she's not a target for him." my friend says, her voice starting to sound calmer.

I nod even though she can't see me. "Thanks for calling me, Care."

Flashback

"You can stay here as long as you want." Matt said, helping me set up the couch for me to sleep on.

I gave him a grateful smile. "Thanks! But I won't need to stay for long. Just long enough to give Stefan and Caroline enough time to compel the lawyer to sign the house over to me. As soon as my home isn't  Jenna's anymore, Klaus won't be able to come in anymore. I'll be safe there again."

He nodded. "Yeah, I get it. But still, you're welcome here and I want you to know that. Okay?"

I nodded. "Okay. Goodnight Matt. And thank you again."

The next morning, Stefan called me and confirmed that my house was safe to return to. I thanked him and headed to the front door where Matt was about to leave for his shift at the Grill.

"Hey, Matt! It's done, I can go home again. I can-" the sight I found made my voice get caught in my throat. Klaus was standing there, right on the porch. With a devilish smirk on his face and my friend Matt dangling in the air, a hand wrapped around his neck.
