On the very next day, a Mikaelson approaches me. Not any Mikaelson: the Queen B of viking villages, Rebekah Mikaelson."Well, greetings, future sister." Her grin matches her teasing tone of speaking.
I bite my lip, feeling awkward. "Greetings Rebekah. I was actually just about to go to your hut. I need to talk to Elijah."
"I suppose you can. But, it's going to have to wait. Shouldn't bother you, after all, you'll have your entire life to chat with him. First, I'm going to take you for myself for a while." she declares with determination.
For the next hour or so, Rebekah and I talk, about everything she can think of. My likes, my skills, my feelings for Elijah, everything. She doesn't hold back with her questions and when I get a bit uncomfortable, she ignores it. The conversation actually shows me that she's pretty much the same Rebekah I've always known. Much unlike Niklaus and Elijah, who are very different from the cold-hearted monsters I knew in Mystic Falls in what feels like a lifetime ago. Rebekah was bold and direct but with a heart of gold back then and she is just that right now. I think that's great. It shows her mental strength and durability.
The conversation goes smoothly enough until Rebekah eventually says this:
"I've got to say, it'll be great to have a sister around. The hut was starting to feel a little empty without Niklaus."
"Wait, hang on... are you saying..." I begin, but don't finish my sentence, realizing this might be better discussed with Elijah rather than with his sister.
"Actually, Rebekah, can we continue this later? I really need to talk to Elijah."She gives me a meaningful look full of smugness and amusement, but then tells me where to find him. When I make my way to the man I love, my anxiety is even higher than it was before. I actually feel a bit nauseous.
"Elena. Good to see you. Can I help you?" he greets me with a smile and then comes to envelop me in his arms.
I return his hug, still enjoying his affections as always. "Yes, you can, actually. There's something I need to tell you. And, uh, something I have to ask you. Can we talk somewhere alone?"
"Of course. This way."
Elijah leads me through the forest until we reach the quarry again. This seems to be becoming our regular meeting place. Once we're there, we sit down on a boulder next to each other. Elijah takes my hand and asks me what I wanted to talk about.
I hesitate at first. My nervousness hasn't exactly lessened. I'm so glad Elijah is holding my hand right now. Eventually, I say: "Elijah, do you remember how people thought it was strange that I came to the village over night when no one else did and there was no sign whatsoever of the ship that supposedly brought me here?"
"Yes. But even if you didn't come here by ship, what does it matter? You're here now." He strokes the back of my hand with his thumb.
I exhale, a small smile on my lips. "I am. But that's not the point, you see. The point is, I didn't come here over distance. I've been living in this place my whole life. The reason why you've never met me before is because I... technically haven't been born yet. Truth is, Elijah, I'm not from the old land. I'm from the future. Tatia isn't my sister, she's my ancestor. And my name isn't Elena Peterson. My name is Elena Marie Gilbert. I was sent here by one of my best friends in an hour of desperation."
Elijah furrows his eyebrows and looks away, seemingly busy processing the news. I give him a minute to take it in. Then, I tell him the rest. When I'll be born, who my actual family is and about Caroline and Bonnie. I also tell him a little bit about him and his siblings still being alive in my times. This part peaks his interest. But when he asks me to tell him more about it, I hesitate.
"Elijah... Ayana told me to lay low here. Technically, I'm not supposed to tell you all this at all. I'm not sure if I should tell you even more." I confess.
He throws his head back and laughs good-naturedly. When his amusement ebbs away, he gives me a kind look. "Oh Elena. Ayana is a very strict, traditional and careful woman. If it was up to her, no one would ever change anything about this world. Her motives may be honorable in their own logic, but her expectations are not something anyone could be beholden to. The world changes. There's no way around it. I don't know if what you might tell me will change the future. Perhaps the future has already been written. But I do know that it won't hurt anyone to talk about it. Besides, from what you've told me so far... what's the worst that can happen? The future you've described isn't exactly a fairytale."
"Huh." Now I have to chuckle a bit too, "I guess you're right. It wasn't. Well." I take a deep breath, "I actually would like to talk about it. It's been a long time since I last even said my friends' names. I can tell you all about it, if you're willing to listen. But I have to warn you: some things I've learnt back then are secrets that are currently being kept within your family. It'll probably shock you. Or, actually, it's definitely going to shock you."
"That's alright. Please, tell me anyway."
So I do. Part of me is a little scared of the risks I'm taking by telling him, but I trust Elijah. And if he and I are going to be a married couple, I want us to be partners in everything.
My suspicions turn out to be right. The dark-haired Mikaelson is deeply shocked by my revelations. It takes him several minutes until he even finds words to say anything again. During that time, he gets up, paces around and runs his fingers through his hair.
Eventually, he meets my gaze again and sighs. "We have to tell him."
I sigh. "Yes, I think we do. But we'll need to do it carefully."
"We will. I know what to do." His expression becomes hard with steely resolcve. He takes my hands in his and fixates me with this intense look I know so well. "We'll tell him tonight. Come, we have much to do."
He begins to lead me away, but I stop him. "Wait! There's still one... no, actually, there are still two more things."
"Two more secrets?" His sound of speaking is almost desperate.
"No, no secrets. I already told you those. No, I mean, two more things concerning... us." I draw a deep breath. I'm fairly confident that I know the answer to my question, but I still need to ask.
"Elijah, after everything I just told you... do you still want to marry me?"His expression relaxes and smiles fondly at me. "That's what you're worried about? Frankly, I don't see how that could even be a question. Of course I still want to marry you. If I was only granted the chance to do one more thing in my life, it would be making you my wife."
"Aw." I let out a relieved sigh and beam, my cheeks probably as pink as a peach.
His smirk becomes amused. "Provided you finally agree, that is."
"Oh. I almost forgot. Yes."
"Yes?"
"Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! I want to marry you!"
Elijah swoops me up and kisses me. I kiss him back wholeheartedly. For a while, my handsome fiance and I get carried away and I forget about our problems. It isn't until after we pull away and go to hold each other for some time that I remember that second thing I need to ask him.
"Elijah?" I begin, my head still safely buried in his shoulder.
He hums.
"Rebekah said, when we get married, we would live with your family... including your parents. Is that really the plan?"Hi guys, 🙂
Hope you like the new chapter. Any thoughts? 🙂
