A few weeks later

As time passes, life goes on and I am happy to report that we are quite happy. All of us. Except maybe Mikael, but who cares?! I mean, when was that man ever actually happy anyway?
The point is, the life we've built here for ourselves is working out really well. I've continued working as a midwife whenever necessary while doing my part of the household work as Elijah's wife, together with Esther and Rebekah. In private moments, my noble husband and I often sneak away in order to... well... tear each others' clothes off and ravish one another. We actually found a really romantic spot by the quarry near the waterfall that is kind of perfect for our purposes. The sound of the falling water ensures that nobody who might happen to be around can hear us and all the trees, shrubs and boulders of the cliff everywhere make sure that we can't be seen either.

The little family of Tatia, Niklaus and Haakon has been happy too. Now that I no longer live with them, they seem to have more time for themselves which is pretty good. Niklaus has been doing his best as a father to Haakon, Tatia is being a good wife and mother and every so often, those three make their way over to the wolfpack village where Ansel and his wife are always happy to welcome them as guests. The only issue here might be the fact that Esther and Mikael have been noticing that Niklaus doesn't visit them anymore really. He may have seen his parents once or twice during those last few months, avoiding them. He still sees his siblings, almost daily, but not his parents. Still, this might end up being a bad thing. Esther doesn't like losing control of her children and Mikael hated Niklaus so much before this already. Eventually, this could get ugly.

However, before such a thing can happen, we will be going into the caves again for another full moon night. The first one where Elijah and I will be sleeping next to each other instead of apart. Which is really nice, but it would be even nicer if his parents were sleeping a bit farther away from us. Ah, well, it's nothing I'm not at least somewhat used to. By now, I know pretty much everything about the Mikaelsons' habits and sleeping traits. Esther, Finn and Kol all snore a bit. Rebekah sometimes mumbles in her sleep and Elijah sleeps so deeply that it sometimes tseems like it would take a literal gunshot to wake him up again. Which is actually quite practical, because this way, I can adjust my sleeping position anytime, laying on his chest or simply cuddled up to his side, he never wakes up. It's not often, only when I wake up in the middle of the night for one reason or another.

The reason I wake up this night has a name. Haakon.

"Auntie Elena?" The small hand of my nephew gently shakes my shoulder and pulls me from my slumber.

I look at his cute face in the dim moonlight the cave provides. "What is it?"

"I can't sleep. Mother and father don't want to wake up and I'm scared. The wolves are howling really loud tonight." he whispers. His tiny voice warms my heart with tenderness while his tone makes me desperately want to protect him.

I reach out to him with my arms. "Come here, sweetheart."

He lays down next to me and snuggles into my side. On my other side, Elijah keeps sleeping peacefully. Haakon looks at him shortly, then nestles his head onto my shoulder. For a while, we're both silent, just lying there. Outside, wolves are howling and screeching sometimes. And in here, people are sleeping. Those who can anyway. Some cannot. And for those are the ones that are standing by the small opening in the wall of the caves that lets in the silvery moonlight. I see Rebekah and Ayana standing there, talking quietly with each other. But mostly, it is quiet in here.

Eventually, my little nephew starts to whisper to me again.
"Are the wolves evil?"

"No." I answer softly, "They are not. You see, the wolves you can hear outside are not normal wolves. They're werewolves. And a werewolf is a person, Haakon. Like you and me. On any normal day, they are just people. Working on the fields, hunting for boars and loving their families, just like everyone else. But one night a month, on the night of the full moon, their bodies change into the bodies of wolves. In that form, as wolves, most of them have little control over what they do and some aren't even aware of what they're doing. In those nights, they are beasts, following their instinct to hunt. To make matters worse, they are really strong in those nights. That's why we stay in the caves during nights like these. So they can't hurt us. And we don't hunt them, because they're our friends at any time other than these nights. We don't want them to be hurt either. Do you understand?"

He looks at me for a while, his clear, innocent eyes seeming thoughtful, considering what I just said.
"Yes, I guess."

After that, we don't talk much more. Mostly because we're both tired, I suppose. Haakon soon falls asleep. Now, I have two boys sleeping on either side of me. Husband and nephew. A fleeting thought in my mind whispers that maybe, one day, it'll be my husband and our child sleeping like this. But that thought leaves my mind as quickly as it came and I fall into a slumber, forgetting everything around me.

"Elena! Wake up!" someone frantically shakes my shoulder.

Feeling groggy, I slowly open my eyes and see Rebekah standing over me, shaking me awake. She looks scared as hell.

"What's the matter?" I ask, mumbling a little with sleepiness.

She pulls me to my feet. When I stand upright, she says the words we all hoped would never be said.
