The girl and the doctor leaned on one of the metal crates at the empty sea port. The girl slumped to the ground and pulled her knees close to her chest. "When will we find it" she asked. The doctor looked at her and smiled."Soon. I can almost smell it" he replied. The girl smiled and buried her face in her knees. They had spent the last few years searching for the device the doctor had called, The Diviner. It was supposed to transform her, make her the beautiful angel her grandmother had promised she would become. She greatly anticipated the day she would finally see it and become the divine creature she dreamt of.
Once Chan was sedated, we drove back to our Hong Kong lab and readily began tests on Chan's blood. Debbie lead the research team but it was I who knew what we were looking for. I looked at one of the moniters in the lab. It would take a while to get the results and not to mention if Chan awoke. "Raina, I've already told you. We have this under control. The results will be here soon and I know what to do from there. I do not need a babysitter. Po trusts me enough to let me do this alone, so leave". I turned and smiled at Debbie sweetly, despite my growing annoyance with her petty arguments. "Debbie. You really are pathetic. I don't know what Po sees in you. I am more than capable of doing your job, even more so. You are a temporary help to stabilizing the Centipede serum. You are not needed, so stop acting as if you are important. Neither Po nor the Clairvoyant desire your assistance, so if I were you, I would simply do my job without stepping on any toes". I walked away leaving a dumbfounded Debbie standing frozen in place.
When a sizable amount of Chan's blood was drained for testing, he was relocated to one of our safehouses. By this time the sedative had worn off and Chan was coming to. I was tasked with ensuring his continuing cooperation. Chan slowly sat up in the small bed he laid in and as soon as he saw me, began to quickly stand up. "Where am I, who are you and what do you want with me" Chan screamed, more out of rage than fear. I gently smiled. "There is no need to be afraid Mr. Yin. My colleagues and I are simply here to help. We want to enhance your abilities, make you stronger than you ever were. We want your name to be known, for all people to remember your legacy and to know who you are". Chan smirked. "Like a superhero" he asked. "Whatever you want. You can be anything you want. Although, Chan Ho Yin is a lengthy name. You need a simpler name. A more powerful name. A name like...Scorch". Chan seemed highly amused at this point. He laughed. "Scorch? Are you joking". I seemed quite surprised that he was taking this opportunity as lightly as he was. " Have you ever heard of Steve Rogers"? I could see the confusion on his face. "No? But Captain America, now he's on the news, on a lunch box, on a poster on the wall". Chan's interest was suddenly heightened. "You're saying I can be as big as Captain America"? "With your powers, and our enhancements, you can be bigger than Captain America" I coaxed. Chan broke into a wide smile. "When do we get started" he asked. " I thought you might say that" I replied. Chan was staying with us and soon Phase Two would finally be complete.
