"Mom, can you get me a juice box?" Winnie asked, wandering into the kitchen.
"Don't call her mom," Steve snapped.
You froze, your heart sinking, before you got back to getting your step-daughter a juice box, Steve and Bucky's words echoing in your mind: Rule #3: The girls always get their way. You'd almost laughed when they laid down all of the rules when you got back from your honeymoon. It wasn't a joke, though. They had high expectations for you as their wife. Turns out, their late wife Peggy was a picture of perfection that you only paled to in comparison.
"But she is mom," Sarah argued, appearing from behind her twin. "Can I have a juice box too, please?"
"Your mom is Peggy," Bucky said through gritted teeth. "You'll respect your mother's memory by not calling Y/N that, understand?"
"But—" Winnie began to argue, stomping her foot.
You quickly crouched down in front of the girls, handing each of them a juice box. "Winnie, Sarah, you know better than to argue with your dads. They do so much for you, and so did your mother. They deserve your respect, don't they?"
"Yes," they said.
"Then don't you think you owe them an apology?"
They looked like they wanted to fight further. They were like their dads that way. Stubborn, quick to anger, always ready to fight for what they thought was right. But they knew a losing battle when they saw one, so they turned to their dads, apologizing for their disrespectful actions.
Steve and Bucky shared a glance, before Steve said, "We'll forgive you, but don't let it happen again. Now, run along. Raven's Home should be coming on soon."
You watched as they ran off to the living room, sighing to yourself before you stood to your full height once more. You faced them, but wouldn't meet their eyes as you said, "I'm sorry they do that. I promise I don't do anything to encourage it. I always tell that Peggy will always be their mom, and that I'm just here to take care of them."
