You tapped your foot on the tile floor, glancing down at your watch. Thirty minutes late. Fuckers made a big deal about apologizing and they were ten minutes late. You huffed, shaking your head, leaning back in your seat with your arms crossed over your chest.
Finally, though, finally, Steve and Bucky came running in. They spotted you at the booth you were sat in, and immediately rushed over.
"So sorry about that, doll—"
"Don't call me that," you said. You glanced down at the bag Bucky was holding. "That my shirt?"
"Yeah, yeah, here," he said, holding it out to you.
You took it from his hands, pulling the shirt out. It was a nice blouse. A pretty blue color not much different from the one you spilled punch on. And, look at that, they even got your size right.
"We asked Nat was size shirt you wore," Steve said. "Figured she would still remember from the Christmas and birthday presents back in school."
"Oh, would you look at that, you do have a brain you can use." You folded the shirt back up, returning it to its bag. Then, you stood up, looking between them. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be leaving."
"Wait, you said you'd—"
"That was before you disrespected me and my time," you said. "You were thirty minutes late. I'll allow an explanation as to why, but I will be leaving after that."
"We..." Bucky tried, but came up with nothing. "We lost track of time. We're sorry."
"Okay. Well, thanks for at least showing up, I guess. Goodbye."
"Can't we at least get you a coffee first?" Steve asked.
You shook your head. "No. I...After this, I don't want to see or hear from either of you ever again. I gave you a chance. You blew it. I didn't have much faith in you to begin with, but the little I did have is now nonexistent. You treated me like shit for all of college, and I'm not about to let it happen again."
With that note of finality, you pushed back Steve and Bucky, walking out of that café and out of their lives. You didn't once look back. You hadn't really wanted closure, but now...Now at least you knew that those tigers couldn't change their stripes.
But back in the café, Steve and Bucky were sinking into the booth you once sat in, the dejection washing over them.
"We fucked up, didn't we, Stevie?" Bucky asked.
"Yeah, we did."
"There's nothing we can do now, is there?"
"No, I don't think so." Steve reached across the table, grabbing at Bucky's hand. "I wish I could just turn back the clock and do this all over again. Never treat her the way I did, the way we did."
"Me too," Bucky mumbled. "But...I don't know. We probably wouldn't have been good for her anyways. Maybe it's for the best that this happened."
"Maybe. Guess we'll never really know."
