You had no idea where the driver was getting you. He was dead silent and his mind was useless. Right. Right. Left. Useless. You didn’t feel like talking either, so you just waited. Then he stopped the car and left. He didn’t even say goodbye. Rude. You probably wouldn’t have either, though.
You looked around you. Did they really send you to a farm ? You tried to see if there was anyone you could ask for information. Kids. In a field. Too far, you didn’t feel like walking. If Happy sent you to some kind of summer camp, you’d never forgive him. You had lived in New York your whole life, you were not made to live on a farm.
You thought about going to the house in front of you and introducing yourself, but you still didn’t want to talk to anyone. There was a pile of wood close to you. You took a log from the top and sat on it.
There didn’t seem to be another house around. Good. You closed your eyes and enjoyed the silence for a while. You jumped from your seat when you heard footsteps behind you.
“Do you want something to eat ?” A woman was standing in front of you. “We didn’t know when you’d be here so we already had lunch.” She chuckled and pointed at the kids playing in the field. “They didn’t feel like waiting.”
“It’s ok. I’m not hungry. Thank you.”
“Get in to rest, at least. Unless you want to chop some wood ?” You smiled back at her and followed her inside. “You’ll visit later. Let’s go to your room.” She led you upstairs and opened one of the doors. “I got you some of my clothes, I hope they fit.” You were used to other people’s clothes, it didn’t bother you anymore. “The bathroom is across the hallway if you need it, by the way.” She started to walk away to leave you alone.
“Thank you-”
“Laura.” She closed the door and you sat on the bed.
You only wanted to close your eyes a few minutes after taking a shower, but you ended up sleeping for a few hours. It was almost dark outside when you woke up and even if you could have slept even more, you didn’t want to be rude to your host. But when you got downstairs, Laura wasn’t in the room. Instead there was a man looking at you.
“Hum, hi. I’m YN.”
“I’m Clint.” You shook his hand and waited for him to say something. But he didn’t. He just walked to the kitchen and started cutting vegetables.
“This is your house ?” He nodded. “It’s nice. Thank you for, you know, taking me in.”
“You’re welcome.” He stopped what he was doing and looked at you. “Pepper told me about you.” He then pointed his knife to your head. “I’m going to ask you not to do it in this house. I’ve had someone in my head before, not a fan.”
“Usually people don’t feel it, it’s just mind reading, that’s-”
“Not in this house.” You agreed to his wish. He was keeping you safe and consequently putting his family at risk, the least you could do was to let them think without intruding. And you needed a break from that. You wanted to try and live like a normal person for a while. Maybe it would help you forget everything. “Are you having dinner with us tonight ?”
“I’m not hungry, but I’ll stay with you, if you’ll have me.”
“Sure. We always love it when someone watches us eat.” You laughed. Maybe it would be weird, but you wanted to be polite.
Clint’s family was nice and dinner went well. You just sat there watching them and as expected, it was weird. But none of them said anything about it. Or about what happened in the last 48 hours.
