“And remember, I’ll be in your ear at all times. Whatever happens, I’ll be there with you. Don’t you worry about anything.”
Happy was a very nice guy, and as much as he may have joked about how you had been a part of the security team for the past few days, you knew he took nothing more seriously than protecting Mrs Potts and her daughter. You trusted him to make sure everything would run smoothly for the night. He made sure your earpiece and mic were working one last time and turned to your boss.
“She’s good to go.”
Not really. You were prepped, but far from ready. There would be more than a hundred people there. Mrs Potts had agreed to go but she wanted you to make sure no one would hurt her. You understood her fear, but maybe not the faith she seemed to have in you.
Since the day she gave you your invitation, you had spent a lot of time with the head of Security. And you realized she was a little obsessed with safety. Not just hers or her daughter’s, there was a whole list of people she was making sure were safe at all times.
You only had a few days to learn about the plan for the night. In theory, it was simple. Mrs Potts and you would be inside enjoying the party, with you coming as, what a surprise, her assistant. That part was easy. Being the version of you that was doing your job. Happy would be staying outside, watching everyone that came inside the building, and telling you if he thought you needed to scan someone he judged suspicious. You could do that. No problem. And you had to globally scan the room. All the time. That was the tricky part. The part you had spent days worrying about. You could do 5 people at the same time, but that many? No way. You had spent countless hours outside with Happy exercising your own brain. Trying to get into as many people as possible at the same time. So far you managed to go up to 12. But you spent the next evening not controlling yourself anymore, and the headache that followed only left you a few hours ago.
You agreed to do it, not that you had a choice anyway. You would just have to focus on a bunch of minds, all the while keeping an ear on Happy’s voice, but also listening to Mrs Potts in case she needed some mind reading for whatever reason, and making sure to make just enough small talk so that you would not be the one to look suspicious. Maybe you could even squeeze a panic attack somewhere.
“YN, can we go ?” she almost looked as panicked as you. You nodded and gave her a slight smile. “It’ll be fine. Just a nice evening. It’ll be over before you know it.”
Was she trying to convince you, or herself ? When you realized it was both, you didn’t feel that bad for yourself anymore. It was probably the first time she went to one of those parties since her husband died. That would explain the excessive amount of mind reading she wanted, only for a simple inauguration at the city hall. Good thing she was not doing anything more dangerous.
Like helping her former Avengers friends. Oh. You almost forgot about them. You had completely ignored the fact that they would be here tonight. Because you told them. Great. Time to panic again.
The music. You didn’t think about the music. Kinda loud too. And people talking to each other. A lot of people. You looked at your boss but some people were already walking towards her. You scanned them first. Nothing. Someone came by to offer some drinks, you declined. Nothing with the waiter either. Then you started looking around you, working your way around the small groups of people. Still nothing.
“You’re staring, YN.”
“I’m focusing, Ma’am.” That was the best plan Happy and you could come up with in such a small amount of time. Focusing on a small number of people at the same time so you’d be able to move quickly from one to the other. But she was right, though. You could look pretty intense while doing so.
