The meeting room was filled with people you had never seen before. Everyone was talking. So much noise. You should have asked for painkillers when you talked to Bruce earlier. Your head was still a mess and there was no way you could scan the whole room and listen to what they’d be saying at the same time.
You spotted Happy and Mrs Potts at the other end of the table and smiled at them. It had been a while, and you were actually glad to see them again. Sam was getting ready for his speech and you looked for an empty seat. Bucky showed you two chairs next to Bruce but before you could say anything, a woman walked towards him with a smile.
“Hey ! They let you out, that’s good news.”
“Just for a while. But Sam said I should come to the briefing.” They talked for a good minute before remembering that you were there. “Sharon, this is YN.”
“Oh, I’ve heard about you. Nice to meet you. Sharon Carter, I’ve been friends with Sam and Bucky for a while now.” You shook her hand and tried to remember if you’d ever heard about her.
“Nice to meet you too.” She seemed pretty nice. Until she decided that you weren’t worthy of her attention anymore and she sat with Bucky and Bruce, leaving you standing by yourself in a room full of strangers.
You went back to the door and leaned against the wall. A few moments later, someone brought you a chair. You looked around and saw Mrs Potts smiling at you. You mouthed a quick ‘thank you’ and sat down. You weren’t sitting at the table like everyone else but at least you didn’t look like an idiot anymore.
Sam told everyone about your meeting with Juan, leaving the details of how you got the information out because he probably didn’t understand it himself, and you had a hard time pretending you didn’t see everyone watching you the whole time. You were just trying to look over someone’s shoulder and take a peek at the file since you didn’t have one.
He had the whole thing figured out. Once he knew where to look, it had been easy to find some suspicious activity going on. A lot of people disappeared somewhere in Alaska, and given it was all in a small region, it wouldn’t be hard to find them. His plan was only to save those people, whether they had been injected or not. Sam didn’t want a repeat of what happened in Canada, and he spent a very long time explaining security measures again and again. Of course, you weren’t invited.
Since he made it pretty clear that you had no room to argue with that, you just stopped listening and decided to read the files later. You leaned back on your chair and looked in Bucky’s direction.
He was apparently in a fascinating conversation with his good friend Sharon. You found it really interesting the amount of friends he had. You couldn’t remember if you had ever heard her name before. Maybe it was time for you to know a little bit more about her. As soon as you got in her head, you felt the whole room moving. You saw Bruce give you a concerned look but brushed it off. He knew you’d stop before pushing too far.
At least he’s not going. So she was concerned about his safety, that was good.
I thought it’d be longer for him to get better. You all did. And thank God, you were all wrong. She must have noticed you were staring at her because her eyes met yours and you felt like someone caught you red handed. You smiled and looked somewhere else, trying to keep your head connected to hers.
Was she in my head ? I thought she’d be… I don’t know. She’s not as I expected her to be. She needs to look at the person to read their minds I th-
“You came back.” Happy got you out of Sharon’s brain. It was a rather good thing since you were starting to dislike her very much. And it had nothing to do with the fact that she was holding Bucky’s arm. Nothing wrong with that because you were now friends. But rather with the fact that she didn’t seem to like you either. Or maybe because you just had a strange feeling about her. “Good to see you, kid.”
