Sorry for the hole in the plot left by the last chapter. I just didn't know how to write it. Maybe I'll come back to it later, but I just needed to get the chapter out after it sitting for too long. Just use your imagination for what happened between the chapters lol
-Oscar POV 1890-
Nine year old Oscar Pennington had had a good life. He had a loving mother and father, he had two fun younger siblings, and he had good, clean clothes on his back and got to go to school every day.
But all of that changed in the months following Mary's death.
First, it was his mother.
She didn't take well to her daughter's death. I mean, you wouldn't expect anyone to be fine and dandy after the events that had taken place, but Mrs. Pennington took grieving to a whole new level.
At first she wouldn't talk to anyone. She wouldn't answer Oscar's schoolwork questions, she wouldn't acknowledge Morris' sobbing, and she wouldn't even look at Mr. Pennington when he tried to speak to her.
Next, she stopped eating the proper amount of food. Yes she would still eat, but each day she looked sicker and sicker.
Then, she started shutting herself in her room, only coming out when everyone was sleeping.
And then it was his father.
While his wife was slowly shutting down, Mr. Pennington took to drinking. Every night he would come home later and later from work, and each time would be a little more drunk than the last.
And of course, Mrs. Pennington wasn't speaking so she couldn't reprimand him for being drunk in front of his sons.
Then one night a few months later, Mr. Pennington didn't come home. Oscar and Morris were scared for their father's well-being, and barely got a lick of sleep that night. He came home the next afternoon, already almost blackout drunk, and did something he rarely did, unless it was for a good reason. He yelled at his sons. Full out screaming rage.
Oscar tried to cover Morris' ears, but the younger boy could hear every word their father said. And neither of them liked it.
Their father told them that he went to check on their mother in her room, but he couldn't find her. Then he searched the room and found all of her belongings gone. Mrs. Pennington had run away.
Morris was devastated, and began sobbing immediately. Both of the girls in his life had just been taken right from underneath him, and on top of that, his father had started drinking and yelling at him and his brother. He was not happy to say the least.
Oscar on the other hand- Poor Oscar. All Oscar could do was stand there in shock as the new information soaked in. He couldn't speak, and he couldn't move. He couldn't even hear his father's yelling or his brother's sobbing anymore. All there was was a ringing in his ear.
