9. Ice Cream

Effy sat on a bench outside of the court room, waiting for Alex. He promised he would he there, but he was twenty minutes late. "Dr Ricci, we need you in here now" Her lawyer sighs, touching her shoulder.

"Effy!" George shouts as he jogs towards her with Bailey and Vincenzo following.

"What are you guys doing here?" She asks, shocked.

"We got the day off to come and see you" The boy smiles.

"You didn't think you were doing this on your own, did you?" Bailey asks, smiling.

"Did you see Alex on your way here?" Effy asks, hopefully.

"No, I'm sorry, bella" Vin frowns, squeezing his daughter's shoulder. 

"It's okay. Let's just get this over with"

"Okay... Could Dr Ricci please walk up to the witness stand" Effy walks over and sits in the witness stand, ready to speak.

"Okay, Dr Ricci, can you please explain in as much detail as possible what Mr Murphy did to you?" Mr Murphy's lawyer asks, standing near her.

She explains everything in as much detail as she could remember. "What were you doing in the bar in the first place?" He asks.

"I was out-" Before she can finish her sentence, Alex walks into the court room, wearing a suit.

"Sorry" He mumbles before rushing to sit beside Bailey.

"Where were you?" She scolds.

"My car broke down, I had to run"

"I was out drinking with my friend Alex"

After Effy's questioning, Alex stood from his seat, "I have something to say" He says, walking towards the judge.

"Objection! Your honour, he has no right" Murphy's lawyer shouts.

"Objection overruled" The judge speaks, beckoning Alex forward, "Proceed"

"Alex, what are you doing?" Effy whispers.

Alex ignores her and goes to stand in the witness stand. "Name?"

"Dr Alexander Karev" He speaks.

"As in the Alex that Dr Ricci was out drinking with?" The lawyer asks.

"You know, she has a name. Her name is Elizabeth, and by you calling her Dr Ricci, it's like you're taking away her rights of feeling human. Which is exactly what Mr Murphy did. He took something from her that she can never get back. He also gave her something, something that she didn't want. But she is pushing through, and she is being so strong, and she's not giving up. Elizabeth is the strongest person I have ever met. She has been through so much, and she is still going. And that's why we love her. Everyone at the hospital loves her. And I'm not leaving this court room until she gets her justice"

Alex looked around the court room, his eyes finally landing on Effy who sat in awe, with tears in her eyes. He cleared his throat before continuing, "We were out that night because we both had a bad day and thought we could cheer each other up. Elizabeth got up to use the bathroom and when 10 minutes passed and she didn't come back, I thought she had already left so I went looking for her. After finding out she was in the hospital, I went back to the bar to get her bag from the bar when I was approached by Mr Murphy. He admitted to me that he had attacked her, and I have video footage from the bar of him exiting the restroom minutes before Elizabeth did, and him approaching me outside"

"Thank you, Dr Karev. If you could please hand Mr Bates the footage so he can show me" Alex pulled a USB stick out of his pocket, that he had gotten from Joe. He handed it to Mr Bates who plugged it in to the small monitor in the room. The judge watched intently, seeing that Karev was telling the truth about what was on the footage, "Thank you, Dr Karev. If you could return back to your seat please?"

Alex smiles, walking away from the stand and sitting back next to Bailey. "That was good, Karev. Well done" Bailey compliments.

"Grazie" Vin smiles gratefully before looking forward to see Mr Murphy in the stand and Effy's lawyer about to talk to him.

"Mr Murphy, is it true that you were just recently in prison for the exact same reasons as you are in court today?" She asks.

"Well, yes, but that-"

"So you admit that you have done this before?"

"I mean, I got found guilty but that doesn't mean-"

"So you did get found guilty, meaning there was enough evidence that you did something wrong. Just like the evidence that has been presented today?"

"Well, yes, but-"

"What were you doing in the bar that night?"

"I was out drinking"

"With a friend or on your own?"

"On my own"

"Did you enter the bar with the intention of raping someone?"

"No..."

"Did you know that Elizabeth was going to be there?"

"I-"

"So, let me get this straight. Your plan was to go out for a drink, find a pretty girl, wait until she went to the bathroom, make sure she was alone, and rape her when she was defenceless after spiking her drink?" The lawyer kept speaking at Murphy tried to but in.

"No! I knew exactly where I was going. I followed Dr Ricci there on purpose. I cornered her in the bathroom by design. And I didn't spike her drink like any idiot lawyer would think. I kept paying for her drinks knowing she would keep taking them. I had it all planned out! And I'd do it again if she didn't end up pregnant!" Murphy shouts before realising what he had just said.

"Oh my God" His lawyer sighs, dropping his head to the table.

"Oh my God" George says, disgusted.

"Oh my God" Effy whispers, holding back her tears.

"Judge Taylor, I rest my case"

"Mr Murphy, I now declare you guilty as charged. I sentence you to 18 years in prison"

Effy cheers along with her friends. George hugs her tightly, congratulating her. Then Bailey hugs her, then Vin, and finally Alex.

"You did it" He smiles, hugging her softly.

"Thank you for coming. For a minute there I thought you weren't gonna show"

"My car broke down, I had to run here. I'm sorry for being late, but I'm here now. And you won"

"Yeah, I won. You know, what you did was really stupid. Thank you" Effy smiles, hugging everyone again before they left the court room.

"Come on, let's go get ice cream. I'm buying" The three interns cheer as Vincenzo leads them out.

This chapter was really just a filler so you guys know what happened with the case. I didn't wanna leave it too long because then I would forget to write it. Only one more episode to write! What would you guys like to see in book 2?
