"And then there were these lights! And houses and trees! " I turned in my bed so I was facing oranges directly. "And it was awesome!"

Oranges gave me an unimpressed look and turned his face away from me.

"You should have seen it, Orange's! Maybe I'll bring you next time"

Oranges ears perked up and his eyes narrowed as if to say;  "next time?"

I turned in my bed and reached for my pillow, quickly taking the device from under it.

I showed it to oranges. "Isn't this cool?" I hold it to my ear like I'd seen my dad do many times before.

Then suddenly the phone started ringing and it blared loudly in my ears.

I squinted at the light coming from the phone, the words 'ghost' flashed on the screen.
Panicked, I quickly reduced the volume of the phone and sighed in relief when the ringtone could no longer be heard.

But that didn't help the fact that I was sure my dad heard it. Of course he did. Astronauts probably heard me.

And sure enough, seconds later, my dad burst in. A look of worry mixed with confusion plastered on his face.

"What was that?! Are you okay?!" He asked, frantically looking around the room.

I quickly hid the phone behind me a gave him a big smile.
"Hey Daddy" I said sweetly.

He narrowed his eyes at me, "was that sound coming from your room?"

I want to lie, I know he'll believe me if I do. He always believes me. I'm his little girl.

But was I ready to lie to his face?

No.

Slowly I pulled out the phone from behind my back and outstretched it towards him.

I lowered my head, afraid of his reaction and felt the phone slowly being taken from my hands.

"...how did you get this?..."

I swallowed hard but spoke up. "The scanner broke, so...... I went outside." I quickly blurted out the last part. I'm not sure he heard me because he was silent for a while. I didn't bring my head up, I was to scared of his facial expression.

"... Outside?..." He repeated.

No longer bearing it, I slowly brought my head up to see him. At first it was nothing. Nothing but a blank face.

Then his face turned red and morphed into anger. An anger that had never been directed to me.

"Dammit! You lead them right to us!" He screamed.

I took a step back at how loud he was. I wanted to apologize, to beg for forgiveness ,anything to subside his anger.

But what happened next made me forget all that.

With a frustrated scream, he lifted his arm up and lounged it forward, releasing the phone and causing it crash against the tile floor.

"Dad!" I yelled, feeling my eyes getting glossy.

But he didn't stop there, after he smashed it he proceeded to stomp on it repeatedly until it was only shattered glass and bits of wire.

"Dad! That's not fair!" I screamed, hot tears streaming down my cheeks. I pulled on his leather jacket, trying to get him to stop. "Dad! Your ruining it-"

"Shut up!" Dad said roughly pushing me away from him. Out of shock and fear I lost my footing and tripped, my arm landing on s stray shard of glass from the phone.

Their was silence.

I slowly got up and examined the wound, not once meeting my fathers gaze. It was bleeding badly and the shard of glass was still in it, lunged in my skin as if to taunt me.

I pulled out the shard and winced at the pain it brought. I stared at it, black, broken and half covered with blood. Then I looked up to meet my fathers eyes.

The anger was long gone, only regret left.

But its too late for that.

I used a hand to cover the wound to stop the bleeding, it didn't work, it drenched my hand in blood. But I didn't look at it. I just kept staring at the man who caused it.

He sighed and ran a hand through his thinning hair. "Honey, im-

"Don't talk to me" I choked out, clutching the injury tightly. The blood dripped down from my hand and onto the tile floors. But that was the least of my concerns.

He took a step forward, stepping on whatever was left of the phone and I took a step back.
"Can you just listen to-

"No!" I said, tears falling down my face. I sniffed. "I listen to you all the time!"

I could tell he wanted to say something but I didn't let him.

"I listened to you for 17 years!" His face softened and I continued, my voice getting louder yet crack. "I never disobeyed you! When you told me you wanted to lock me inside with no explanation! I listened! Like an idiot!"

"Honey, wai-"

"And when you started teaching me how to fight and use weapons with no experience on the outside world, I listened!" I choked on tears. "I listened to you all the time, except this one time and it was great!"

Oranges came over and stood next to me, tissue in his mouth, probably for the bleeding.
"I met new people and saw different places and things! I learnt what trees are! And that plants are living things! And that you need money for pizza! And it was fun!"

He almost cracked a smile at the last part but this wasn't funny.

"I listened to you because I thought you were right about the outside world being dangerous! But. You. Weren't!"

He reached out to touch me but I took another step back.

"Don't touch me!" It came out as nothing more than a whisper, I wasn't sure if I could scream anymore, my throat still hurt.

It was quiet for a while. I was still thinking of what to say, but nothing else came to my mind.

Except one thing;

I let out a shaky breath. "I don't think I wanna listen to you anymore"

And with that I left the room.
