"Last night, I stayed up just a little later trying to figure out what the hell was going on with the website, Yeah?" He sets the laptop down on my pillow, stretching himself across my bed and his feet fall lazily over the woodframe.
I use a foot to roll him to the side of the bed but he won't move. I use two feet instead. "Move over you giant turtle."
"Creative."
I kick him and he fakes a wince and rolls over. I lay next to him and Ghost sits silently at the edge of the bed, watching us. I told him everything that happened last night. well. Maybe not everything. I don't tell him about the poison in my blood and I don't mention that I know how he lived before he became Ghost. I only tell him about what I found about my father. About him and Big Ben.
About Yvonne.
About me.
"I don't understand." Ghost says thoughtfully, arms crossed, muscles bulging. "Why would someone try to delete you? I somewhat understand the Ladies' part, but why you? And why then?"
"That's the thing! I don't know!" I'm nearly yelling and I sigh."I don't know anything about anything. There are so many things out there about my family and myself and I know absolutely nothing."
I fold myself on the bed and sigh. Ghost has never been good with feeling and we are starting new so he doesn't know what is appropriate and what is not. He stares at me thoughtfully, mind swimming behind his deep brown eyes. Usually, I would turn away to avoid his gaze but Ghsot does most of his talking with his face, the brightening of his eyes or the slight furrow of his brows. Today they soften, the brown of his irises melting the chocolate. I'm familiar with the look.
I'm sorry.
For what exactly, I'm not sure but appreciate the sentiment.
"Ghost, I-"
"Shh!"
I turn to M.C, quickly irritated. "Did you just shush me?"
"And I'll do it again! Shh!"
Ghost snorts. I try to kick M.C but he catches my foot before it can make an impact. I'm about to use my other foot but he suddenly pulls me and I gasp, shocked."M.C, I swear-"
"Shush." He says sharply, turning the laptop in my direction. I yank my foot out of his grip and glare at him. He rolls his eyes. "You can kill me at a later date, but you might wanna see this."
I throw him one last glare before looking at the laptop, I squint, unsure of what exactly I'm staring at.
The photos are blurry, caught in the busy action of New York City, but it's zoomed in on one particular person. A woman. Her face is overly pixelated. I stare at it, trying to remember where I recognize it from. Suddenly my skin feels tingly again and I begin to itch, drawing on old wounds.
M.C catches my hand before it becomes damaging and Ghost glances between us, watching the interaction carefully. Then he moves to look at the screen, something changes in his expression. I see it in the way he squints his eyes, the way his lips curlin carefle thought. "Who...is that?"
I pull on my jacket and shake my head. M.C must have covered me before he took me to bed. He knows I wouldn't want anyone to see what I did to my skin. I turn to M.C. "What is this?"
He is explaining, talking about databases and sensors and computer jargon that I'm not smart enough to understand. But I'm listening, at least trying my best to listen. Ghost and I share a glance and I turn to look at the picture again. There's something about it and if I stare long enough, maybe...
He is still mid-talk when something clicks and I roll away, rushing to the closet and flinging it open, its hinges creaking from the pressure.
M.C stands"Y/N-"
"Shush."
"Okay. I...dont like that..."
"Good." I dont have many stuff but somehow when i need something urgently its so hard to find. "Dammit."
"What are you looking for? Maybe ive seen it." Ghost says helpfully, Hes been awfully quiet. Which is fair for Ghost but somehow it feels different. Maybe it is because we are starting fresh, maybe he is watching what he says very carefully this time.
"i just-" My fingers find the edges ofa paper and I gap as i pull it out. Its the newspaper Rebel through at me so long ago. I flip through the pages until i get to the headlines, the one about April. I point that the page, or more specifically, a woman on the page. "Look."
Ghost furrows his brows. "Why do you have this?"
"That doesnt..." I shake my head. "Look. This woman and that woman are the same woman!"
He takes the paper from me, slowly prying it out of my fingers. This is Aprils newspaper and I feel bad for bringing it up but I wasnt thinking toomuch about it, well, at least not too much about her. Just the face. The womans face. I point at the paper, the face is blurry but its her face. "She was there."
His jaw ticks. "I know."
Silence.
Tension spreads throughout the room, thick enough to cut with a knife.
M.C gives him a look, maybe of pity but Ghost doesnt look at any of us.
"Did you...know her?" I ask carefully.
"No."
I glance at M.C and he shrugs. He doesnt share the same grief Ghsot does because he never knew April. As far as I know, they didnt know about her until she was dead.
"Did you... see her..?"
Silence. "Yes."
He doesnt say anything else, he just stares at the paper. M.C clears his throat. "I tried tracking the ips of the person whos been deleting everything but Im not getting any specific locations, Its almost likes shes somewhere off the map or something. "
"Like Y/N." Ghost says finally, in deep thought.
"Like me?"
"After Swift gave you his phone and tried to track you down, we could only get a very vague idea of where you were. Thats why we werent able to find you till you came out." M.C clarifies.
I blink. "How did you know I would leave my house again?"
"We didnt."
"Oh." I dont know how I feel about that but now i have a general Idea of whats going on with the location. If my father and Big Ben are anything alike, I might have the tiniest understanding of whats going on. "Is the vague location in New York?"
"Yes but-"
"We go there, as soon as Rebel and Swift go to bed. " Im too committed to this now. I want to know who that woman is and why they deleted her and why they deleted me. I want to understand my family and what has been going on while I was locked in the confides of my home.
I look at Ghost, hes usually very protective and i think he'll disagree but his eyes narrow at the photo. "Im coming too."
I dont know if hes coming for my sake or his but either way im thankful.
MC sighs, glancing at his laptop. "Do we tell Swift?"
"We dont answer to Swift." Ghost says curtly.
M.C raises both hands in defence. "If you say so."
