Chapter Thirty-Nine
*~*~*~*
Bonnie's eyes were shut tightly and her hands clasped together as she quietly chanted a new spell she had come across in her gran's grimoire. Dozens of lit candles filled the basement of the old witch house, the spirits granting her access to the room and sight of the five coffins that surrounded her. Once she had finished the spell she moved towards the mysterious fourth coffin-- the one that no one could seem to open.
"Uhh! Why won't you open?" She groaned in frustration when the lid still refused to budge in the slightest.
Whispers suddenly filled the air, causing the young witch's body to tense. In the blink of an eye the coffins vanished from sight. An eerie creak from the floorboards sounding overhead. Bonnie's entire body tensed as she craned her neck to look towards the doorway of the room.
"Hello?" She called out. "Is someone there?"
No one responded as she made her way through the room. The hairs on the back of her neck standing up. Every nerve in her body refusing to believe that she was truly alone despite the silence that had greeted her question. Stepping out of the room she was greeted by the sight of Damon standing on the stairs. The vampire raised a single finger to his lips, signaling for the witch to remain quiet.
Hearing footsteps upstairs, Damon turned back around and went the way he'd came, leaving Bonnie alone in the basement once more. When he reached the side door of the house he was greeted by the sight of a hybrid standing face to face with Stefan. Before the hybrid had a chance to make a move though Damon struck, ripping his heart clean from his chest.
"These hybrids are really bringing the neighborhood down," Damon tossed the heart onto the ground alongside the body.
"Funny," Stefan rolled his eyes as they headed inside.
"Any luck?" Damon asked Bonnie once they joined her downstairs.
"What was that?" Bonnie ignored his question with one of her own. "Was someone here?"
"Just one of Klaus' hybrids. Don't worry, I took care of it." Damon shrugged it off. "Again, any luck?"
"Nothing," Bonnie frowned as she turned to look back at the newly returned coffins. "Whoever did this spell wanted to make sure the coffin stayed shut."
"Well we need it open," Stefan spoke bluntly to the witch. "Whoever is in there is our key to bringing Klaus down. So are you gonna get it open or not?"
"I'm doing my best," Bonnie insisted. "You know, it might be easier if you'd let me ask Brigs to help. She's been around for as long as Klaus. She probably knows the way to open this thing and who's inside it."
"According to Maleficent, she's as clueless as us on who's in there," Damon shook his head. "Didn't even seem to know that there was a fifth coffin."
"So why not let her help? She probably wants this thing open as bad as we do. We all know she's not a fan of Klaus," Bonnie pointed out.
"She might not be a fan of Klaus, but we don't know how close she was to the others." Stefan pointed out to the young witch. It being his own reluctance to trust the thousand-year-old witch that had kept Bonnie or Damon from bringing her in on things so far. "The last thing we need is to have her pull the dagger out of one of the others."

Damon's jaw was locked as he swung the shovel he'd found in the basement against the locked coffin over and over again. The sound of the metal hitting the coffin's lid echoing throughout the entire house, instantly catching Stefan's attention when he came back inside.
