Chapter Fifty-Three

*~*~*~*

"Don't you look chipper." Rebekah raised a brow as she watched Brigs make her way into the living room the morning after her return to New Orleans. It had been nearly two in the morning by the time she and Niklaus had made it home, allowing them both to slink off to bed-- escaping any possible questions from Rebekah or Hayley for a few hours. "Have fun running off to help the children, did you?"

"I'm not in the mood, Rebekah." Brigs warned the blonde, plopping herself down in one of the chairs.

"Aw, why not? Get into another fight with the doppelganger? Or maybe the Salvatores tried to kill you again?" Rebekah taunted, well aware of the strain between her sister-in-law and the Mystic Falls gang. It was that knowledge that had left her and Klaus both shocked to hear that she had taken off without any warning. Just a simple text to Hayley, promising she would be back.

"Bonnie dropped the veil in Mystic Falls... People were starting to pop back up and were causing trouble." Brigs enlightened her. "I didn't go back for them; I went back to protect the innocents in town."

"The supernatural returning from the dead..." Rebekah mused over the thought for a moment before a large grin spread across her lips. Brigs almost able to see the light bulb going off over her head. "Innocents my ass. You went back for your hunter."

"We had a deal." Klaus' voice filled the room, saving Brigs from having to come up with a response to Rebekah's skillful deduction. Instead, both women found themselves looking at where Sophie Deveraux now sat in the chair beside Brigs' while an angry Klaus stood in the middle of the room. "You protect my unborn child, I dismantle Marcel's army, and whilst I've been busy fulfilling my part of the bargain, you allowed Hayley to be attacked and almost killed by a gaggle of lunatic witches."

"What?" Brigs' eyes widened at the information, it all being new to her.

"Bayou doctors are a no-go now," Rebekah offered a shrug of her shoulders.

"I had nothing to do with it, I swear," Sophie insisted. "Hayley and I are linked, remember? She dies, I die."

"Then who were they?" Rebekah questioned.

"They're a faction of extremists. Sabine stupidly told them about some vision she had about the baby," Sophie explained.

"What kind of vision?" Brigs frowned at the mention of Sabine. While she might not be 'close' with any of the Quarter witches, that didn't mean she was clueless. She had heard whispers about the young witch's accuracy when it came to visions.

"You know she has them all the time," Sophie tried to shrug it off, clearly not taking much stalk in the other woman's visions herself. "They're totally open to interpretation. I'm guessing she's wrong on this one."

"Well, how, may I ask, was this particular vision interpreted?" Klaus settled himself down beside Rebekah on the couch, his own interest peaked.

"Pretty much that your baby would bring death to all witches," Sophie summed up.

"Ah, well, I grow fonder of this child by the second." The corners of Klaus' lips twitched upwards at the news.

"Niklaus," Brigs shot the hybrid a warning look.

"Oh, don't worry, love. You're safely linked to my brother. No danger for you," Klaus assured her.

"Sophie," Rebekah cut in. "Look. I promised Elijah that I would protect the Mikaelson miracle baby whilst he tries to win your witch Davina's loyalty. Why don't you tell me just how extreme this faction is?"
