Chapter Twenty: Kill or Be Killed

*~*~*~*

"Remind me how I got dragged into helping out with this?" Garrett questioned as he followed Brigs about the park for Mystic Falls Historical Society Volunteer Day. "Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to be spending the day with you, but last time I checked I'm not a resident of Mystic Falls, just a visitor. And, besides, don't you have boyfriend you could be dragging around here instead?"

"We fell behind on grading with everything that's been going on lately. But we also still signed up to help out today," Brigs explained for her friend. "Ric and I decided to draw straws to see who did what and he just so happened to be the lucky one to draw grading."

"Still doesn't explain why I'm here," Garrett pointed out.

"Jenna asked you to help out and you just so happened to be whipped?" Brigs offered an amused grin to the vampire, both of them fully aware of just how true her words were. It had only been a handful of months and Jenna had already managed to get the Sullivan vampire wrapped around her finger.

"This is all part of the Historical Society's continuing efforts to give back to the community. Thanks to the generous donation of the Fell family, we are now standing on the site of our newest public park." Carol Lockwood spoke into the microphone that was set up at the other end of the park, allowing her words to echo across the large space. "Thank you to everyone who has shown up today to lend a helping hand. Thanks."

"Another question," Garrett cleared his throat as he casually glanced around the park. It didn't take long for his gaze to land on the one and only Mason Lockwood, having had the pleasure of meeting the man the previous weekend after Jenna had invited him over for a cookout. As he watched Mason unload stuff out of his Jeep he spotted another familiar face approaching him. "What plots do the Salvatore brothers have up their sleeves for today?"

"Nothing, we're all just helping out. Why?" Brigs' brows furrowed at the question.

"I'm not sure they were given the memo." Garrett nodded in Mason's direction as Stefan reached the Lockwood man.

"Of course," Brigs muttered under her breath. She quickly grabbed ahold of her friend's wrist, dragging him along with her as she hurried towards the Jeep. As they reached the two men she plastered a fake smile onto her lips. "Hey, guys, what's going on?"

"Do I know you?" Mason frowned at the unfamiliar brunette, not failing to notice the way she was still grasping Garrett's arm.

"No, we haven't had the pleasure yet. I'm Brigs Turner, Jenna's friend." Brigs introduced herself, finally letting go of Garrett to shake the Lockwood man's hand. "I was supposed to come to Jenna's cookout, but my boyfriend and I got caught up with something else. But she said you'd be here today and that I should keep an eye out, introduce myself."

"Right, I guess that's how you know Garrett here." Mason eyed the older of the two vampires in front of him.

"Actually, Brigs and I go way back," Garrett shook his head, flashing the werewolf a smirk as he did so. "She's the one that introduced Jenna and I when I came to town."

"And you're Stefan, the other Salvatore." Mason forced himself to turn his attention to the teenager of the group.

"The nice one," Stefan added on, well aware of the silver stunt Damon had pulled at Jenna's cookout. "The one offering an apology."

"Not interested," Mason shook his head.

"Look, my brother acted impulsively," Stefan acknowledged.
