Newt couldn't hide it from himself, he definitely had feelings for y/n. He'd work up the courage to tell them, but there was one problem.
You were dating someone else.
Newt being himself wouldn't dare try to intervene with your relationship. He was too good of a person to do so. So he stood back and watched hopelessly from a distance.
But even though he knew he'd never try to intervene and that you two seemed happy, he still always had a little bit of hope that maybe he'd eventually have a chance.
He'd even help whoever you were dating with coming up with date and gift ideas. He did definitely like you and wanted you to be happy no matter what that meant.
He never once made up some stupid rumor to get the two of you apart or tried to hit on you.
But at moments he did try to distance himself from you just so he wouldn't feel too bad about the situation. And he made it clear to himself to never tell anybody else his true feelings in fear the they'd ever tell you. He did trust his friends, but he didn't necessarily trust if they'd ever slip up on not.
So Newt went off on his own in his life knowing that if you were happy, then he was also happy.
