Sal and Larry mentioned something about the fifth floor being abandoned before, but nothing could've prepared you for what the reality was. It was more than just abandoned. Abandoned would have just meant that there were no residents on this floor anymore and that it had been deserted.
The fifth floor was left almost entirely to the elements of time and devastation.
As soon as the three of you stepped out of the elevator, you were met with a dark and empty hallway. It was nearing the middle of the day by now, yet there was barely any light to be seen. All of the doors had been shut and no windows were visible from outside. There were several bulbs hanging from the ceiling but only three remained lit keeping the hall from being completely engulfed in shade. One was barely flickering, fading in and out of the darkness like everything else on this floor. Wallpaper peeling from the walls in chunks of faded color. Dirt and dust caked at the bottom of the baseboards. All doors were covered in a fine layer of dust. The wooden floors were the worst part aside from the dim lighting. For the level being left behind for years, the floors had evidence of being worn with heavy use. A few floorboards at the end of the hall were becoming loose with age, ready to give way beneath you at any moment.
It was eerily unsettling the way there were footprints, scuff marks, and other signs of people being up here. The boys had mentioned being up here several times during their time of living here.
"Do you guys come up here a lot?" You ask as you watch your feet, making sure to carefully watch your step. Both boys were slightly ahead of you. Neither of them were being as cautious as you were. You gathered that they had been here more often than you thought.
"Yeah kinda. We like to check in with Megan every once in a while. She's really nice. I'm sure she'll be happy to meet another girl." Sally answers.
"As weird as this is, I'm kind of excited to meet her too. Nervous, but in a good way."
"I was too, little dude. I get it." Larry says.
"It'll be okay. Me and Lar are gonna be right there with you." Sal gives a reassuring smile through his mask. You can always vaguely tell what kind of face he's making under there. You can see in his eyes when he's feeling nervous, annoyed, shy, and even happy. Right now, he's happy.
You finally reach the infamous room 504. You step inside the dingy apartment. Sally pulls out his super gearboy from his back pocket and turns it on.
"We're playing games right now?" You ask, a little confused. Sal giggles at your reaction.
"Nope. Todd modified it to be able to detect supernatural hotspots. I found a weird game a while back in the basement before meeting Todd and it made the gearboy light up sometimes, when we got close to Megan. Once we showed Todd, he figured out a way to make the lights more consistent and reliable whenever we got near something that gave off a signal. He's a genius. This is just one of the things that he's helped us out with over the years."
"Wow. That's incredible. I'd love to meet him sometime."
"You'll get to meet all of the gang soon. There's me, Larry, Todd, Chug, Maple, and Ash. And now you of course."
Ash? As in short for Ashley? You didn't know there would be other girls in the group. Not that it was a problem at all. I mean, you were friends with Sal and Larry too, and you were also a girl. Girl friends don't have to mean anything, right? We are all just friends. You didn't know why, but the way Sal said her name made you a little jealous. You knew it was ridiculous to make assumptions about someone you've never even met, but you couldn't help the feeling. Maple also sounded like it could be a girl's name, so you decided to not let your thoughts roam any further.
