Chapter 6

Jayda and I went home, she was giggling practially the entire time, when I felt a slap on my head as I opened the door. I opened my eyes on the floor, and saw Mr Sakai starting to get closer to Jayda.

Hell no! He isn't touching her!

I quickly got in front of him when he landed another slap on my face. I turned to Jayda.

"Leave the house!"

"But-"

"GO, JAYDA!" I yelled at her, I hated it, but it had to be done. She quickly ran out of the house.

Mr Sakai kicked me in the stomach, making me drop down to the floor as he kicked me in my eye.

Shit. That would leave a bruise.

I quickly got up and ran out of the house before he could do anything else, I ran up to Jayda and engulfed her in a hug.

"I'm so sorry! You almost got hurt...because I didn't bother checking if his car was there..."

"It wasn't your fault, Denki! Oh..that looks like it hurt..." She held my cheek as she inspected my eye. "You're going to have a black eye...what'll your excuse be?" I thought about it.

"Fight at the uh...playground?"

"That works. Speaking of playground, can we go? Pleaseeee?" She begged, I chuckled softly at her begging, and silently agreed to it. She cheered and grabbed my hand as she dragged me towards the playground.

"Just a warning! If someone I know comes to the playground, we're leaving." I warned. She turned to me and nodded.

"Okay, but...will we be going back to the Sakai's?" She asked. I thought about for a minute.

"We will, once I am sure he passed out from being drunk." Mr Sakai occasionally got drunk during the day, not often, thank God, but when he was drunk, he became more reckless, hitting and abusing me in more obvious spots that would be harder to cover up. When that happened, I usually took Jayda out and we stayed in town for a bit to let it pass.

"Okay!" She said as we entered the playground. She immediately ran over to the swings and started swinging. I sat down on a bench near enough to the playground exit that we could quickly retreat if need-be. I pulled out my phone and started scrolling through Instagram while keeping one eye on Jayda.

After an hour or so, I saw somebody about Jayda's age approach her and they had a conversation. I smiled to myself. Jayda squealed something in excitement as they both ran to the main playground part.

I looked around the playground for what felt like the millionth time within the hour we were here, just to take in my surroundings.

I looked back down at my phone, when I got a text.

~Texting over~

I smiled to myself. I looked up again, only to see Shinsou entering the park and looking around tiredly as Eri ran up to the playground. I quickly looked at Jayda and shouted at her in English. "Jayda! Time to go now!" I was looking away from Shinsou, I didn't want him to see my eye.

Jayda looked at me, turned back to her friend, mumbled something, and then came back over to me.

"Why'd you call me over in English and not Japanese?" She asked.

I grabbed her hand and lead her out of the park, shouldering my backpack again. "I didn't want Shinsou to know it was me, but I don't know if he knows English that well..." I mumbled.

She said a small "oh" and continued walking with me. I stopped and she looked at me, I gripped my backpack strap tighter. He wouldn't be passed out only an hour after.

"Hey, do you mind checking my backpack for money?" I asked her. She nodded and looked inside my backpack.

"Yeah, there's about ¥1337 ($12.15)."

"That should be enough to buy some food for us, let's head into town." She nodded, zipped my bag, took my hand again, and we started walking.

It was about 2 hours later. I checked the time. 18:14 (08:14 pm). I looked to the side of the bench in the park to see Jayda starting to doze off. Luckily, while we had been eating in the restaurant, I did my homework with her.

I picked her up and sat her in my lap, letting her close her eyes and drift off into sleep, this is how it usually went when we would come home to a drunk Mr Sakai. I usually ended up taking Jayda's sleeping form and I back around midnight or so, that way it was safe.

Pretty soon, Jayda fell asleep, and I went on my phone, still holding Jayda with one hand and my phone with the other. I decided to text Mina, I had forgotten to text her earlier.

I smiled to myself. I liked talking to Mina, she was really an amazing friend, and quite easy to talk to about anything.

I cradled Jayda and shifted her a bit more so she could be more comfortable, and I could too. She stirred a bit, but stayed asleep. I smiled at her. She was adorable.

"Kaminari?!"
