Shinso's POV

Everything was ready and in place. Dad and Papa were hiding around the house, waiting for anything that might happen. I was nervously standing outside on the porch in front of the door. I went over the plan a second, third, and forth time. I kept looking down, making sure that I really did have the papers in my hand and they weren't just an illusion.

"Hitoshi! Why are you just standing there? Part of the plan is to knock on the door, you know." Dad reminded me. I took a deep breath, raised my left hand, made a fist, and knocked on the door. I heard a muffled yell and people rushing up steps.

After a minute, or two, a man in his 40's opened the door, with a neutral expression. He was reasonably handsome, in a man in his 40's kind of way. He had a neatly shaved grey beard. He had a mustard yellow button up plaid shirt, with jeans. His hairstyle was one with little hair on the top of his hair, but he somehow made it work but combing it neatly to the side. The side of his grey hair, however, had enough hair on it to warm his sides for an eternity.

"How can I help you?" He asked me. I cleared my throat.

"My name is Hitoshi Shinso, Denki Kaminari is my classmate, and I came to give him the homework he missed today." I said, holding out the homework I had for proof.

He looked at me, almost as if he was surveying me. Eyeing me with a laser. I started to get uncomfortable, but luckily for me, after a minute, someone who I assumed was his wife came up behind him.

"Hun, who's this?" She asked.

"This is one of Denki's classmates, he came to give him his homework. So, you can just hand that to me, young man, and I'll give it to him." He held out his hand and directed his attention towards me rather than his wife. I stood my ground.

"I don't mean any disrespect sir, but I would prefer to give Kaminari his homework, as there are some things on our math assignment that would make more sense explained by someone who was there, present in class rather than you, your wife, or Google. I promise to only take as much time as I need to to be able to give him tips and such." I said. Him and his wife visibly tensed up, but went back to normal a moment later.

"Very well," his wife said. "You can come in, and I'll tell Denki that someone's here to see him." The man stepped to the side begrudgingly to let me in. His wife went upstairs to get Kaminari, leaving me and the man alone in an awkward and uncomfortable silence.

In what felt like forever, but in reality was probably only a few minutes, his wife came back downstairs. She smiled at me politely.

"You may go upstairs now. Denki's door is the last one on the right." She said. I politely nodded and made my way upstairs. His parents seemed hospitable enough. Maybe it really was just my anxiety speaking. I knocked on Kaminari's door, heard a 'come in', and entered the room.

I saw an old bed stuffed into the corner of the room, which might've been the smallest room in the house. On the opposite side of the room was a desk, with Kaminari's school stuff stacked on top of it, and a chair. There was a wooden stand up closet next to the door, but other than those few things, the room was pretty bare. That left an unsettling feeling in my chest. He had said that his parents were broke, but when I saw the house and the downstairs, they seemed pretty well off. Kaminari's room, on the other hand, didn't seem very well off.

I saw Jayda sitting on Kaminari's bed, peacefully playing with her doll.

"Hey, Shinso. I heard you had homework for me?" Kaminari asked. I turned to face him sitting at his desk.

"Yeah, how you feeling?" I asked as I handed it to him.

"Oh, I'm feeling a bit better, actually. I think it was just a little stomach bug from something I ate last night. I should be back at school tomorrow, though." He said, and gave me his signature smile. But something was wrong, there was another emotion behind it. One that I couldn't quite place my finger on.

"That's good. There's just a couple problems on the math sheet that I should explain for a better understanding." I said. He nodded.

"Haha, yeah, just be prepared to stay for a while, Shinso, math isn't exactly my best subject." He joked. I rolled my eyes playfully as I walked over to him and started explaining the ones that needed explaining.

After maybe half an hour, he said that he understood it enough to do it himself.

"Are you sure? I got time if you need me to explain it more." I offered. He shook his head.

"Nah, it's cool, dude. I got it, besides, I got a phone, I can always text anyone who was in class to help a fellow bro out." He said. I nodded.

"Alright then, if you're sure. See you in school tomorrow, Kaminari." I said. "See you, Jayda."

"See ya, man." Kaminari said.

"Bye bye, Shinso!" Jayda said, waving ecstatically. I gave a small way and then opened the door and headed back downstairs. I saw his parents in the kitchen, having an intense discussion.

"Thank for allowing me into your home, have a good evening." I said politely. His parents nodded politely back.

"You as well, have a safe journey home, and thank you for bringing Denki his homework." His mom said.

"No problem." I walked out of the house, and pretended to walk away from the house, but circled back to find Dad and Papa in their hiding spots.

"Well, it turns out Kaminari was just fine." Dad said to me. I nodded.

"Yeah, seems it, sorry for wasting you guy's time." I apologized. Papa put a hand on my shoulder.

"Hey, don't apologize, kid. It's always better to be safe than sorry, after all. But, now that we know the little listener is safe, how about we go get a bite to eat before we go get Eri?" He said.

"Hiza-" Dad started, but we heard a loud crash from inside the house, and a shrill, but muffled little girls scream.

Nobody glanced at anything or anyone. It felt like the world suddenly went into slow motion. We all started barging towards the house at the same time. To me, it felt like the world was mocking me. Telling me that I should've trusted my gut sooner.

That was the thought that was with me when we all barreled into the house, and saw the scene in front of us.
