Run, Branch!

Branch could only hear the wind rushing by as he sprinted.

There was no looking back.

He didn't know how he was going to leave, or live knowing that the people of colour hated him...

as much as his own uncle...

But that were thoughts for later. For now, he was an escapee, and the King was probably looking for him with guards or something. The Snack Pack were nowhere to be seen the last time he looked over his shoulder.

He felt a pull that guided him towards the light that started it all.

Wait, what?

The only times that he, Branch, felt a pull was if he was...

Near Poppy.

What was she doing here? Was she crazy? Sneaking out from the rooms of confinement her own father put her to? And worse, for him?

Only him?

Branch felt his heart tug again.

Fine. If it took such extreme measures to escape then so be it. But to meet Poppy as he was leaving... he knew, he knew he wouldn't be able to take it.

His heart was going to shatter into a million pieces and he didn't know why.

Perhaps, he thought as he approached the blue light that separated them both and will, always, separate them, that she was the first ever person to make him feel... welcome. Like he was a part of something, like he was... a part of her.

He couldn't find out now, but maybe he'll realise his true feelings later. For now and for ever, he'll go back to his bunker and continue his daily life before he met her.

Even if that was hard.

But he had no choice, he had to go. Or else she'd be in danger. And he didn't, and will never, do that to her.

Poppy felt the familiar tug.

He's here! She cheered, but then remembered what she was supposed to do and for the second time this month, her heart dropped. She stopped in her tracks.

The first being her love, or what she thought was her love, betraying her, the second?

She couldn't meet him anymore.

She couldn't see his face, she couldn't celebrate every time he cracked a smile, even a teeny tiny bit of it... she couldn't do that.

It affected her more than she thought.

Why was this happening to her? She hated it. She felt like he was going to leave forever and never come back, because he was, and she didn't want that, because when did she not get what she wanted when she asked?

Except this time she really wasn't going to have her way in life, wasn't she?

Well, if this is goodbye, for your safety and protection from my father, and to avoid the river of betrayal I've been put through...

Then I'll drown to save you.

A/N: I feel like my chapters are getting shorter and shorter, but I'm having negative thoughts I would like to clear before I come back to write longer chapters.

Anyways, Hi! After a hiatus for like six months I'm back. At this point, I'm almost halfway through this story. I want to know your opinions on this style of writing where everything is just thoughts, as I feel more connected to the characters this way.

For now we have yet to address Poppy's powers, which you will sure find out later, and the backstory of Branch's character as a whole. I hope you do enjoy this. And those who've stuck around since the beginning, thank you. I'm sure there isn't many of you, but I'm grateful for the patience. I'll see you around.
