Responsibility

(Knuckles P.O.V.)

Of all the times the world would be in danger, couldn't Eggman wait until after I finished training my apprentice? She came to Angel Island with a suitcase, a sleeping bag, and a tent. I had to help her set it up because she was fumbling with the stakes. I wish Sonic and Tails didn't need my help right now, poor (Y/N) shaking like a leaf. I almost want to hug her and tell her it's okay but I know that guarding the Master Emerald can be a daunting task. Instead, I give a reassuring pat on her shoulder. "You'll do fine. Just think of it like a vacation but don't get too lax, okay? Keep your guard up." I hope she'll be okay.

(Reader's P.O.V.)

I wave goodbye as Tails' plane leaves with Knuckles. I sit myself beside the Master Emerald and try to relax but I just can't. At any moment someone could show up to steal the Master Emerald. I keep my taser close by and accidentally drift to sleep. When I wake I see Eggman trying to make off with it. "Hey, give that back!" I can't use my taser on a flying machine. Somebody help me!

(???'s P.O.V.)

Somebody help me! From a cold dead sleep, a voice awakens me. Annoyed with the voice, I lash out and smash the nearest object then hear the sound of glass shattering. Except it's not glass, it's the infernal Master Emerald. The shockwave from my kick sent something else flying but I don't particularly care what it was. Something else has preoccupied my attention. A (H/C) (C/T) with shocked (E/C) eyes stares at me. "What have I done?" she whispers. Then she, after collecting herself, shoots me with something. Something electrifying but not particularly painful. I simply rip out the cords and glare at her. Her frightened face doesn't amuse me like I thought it would. Her hands go to her head and she drops her knees into her chest. Somehow I feel like I'm going to regret what I'm about to do.

(Reader's P.O.V.)

A surprisingly gentle hand pats my head in a comforting manner. The person the hand belongs to is the bluish-white hedgehog that I summoned and destroyed the Master Emerald. I choke a sob. I've failed as a guardian and let the Master Emerald get destroyed. Wait... I thought only Knuckles could do that! I stand up so quick I end up hitting the hedgehog who kneeled down to pat my head in the face. "How did you do that?!" I hear the hedgehog groan and hold his nose. He's glaring at me. "Do what?" I hear him grumble from behind his hands. "Break the Master Emerald. I thought only Knuckles could do tha-'' my words get cut off by a sudden earthquake. I fall into the hedgehog, who seems to instinctively wrap his arms around me. My (H/L)(H/C) hair seems to be blowing upwards as if I'm falling. Except it's not just me falling, it's the whole island. Once it hits the water's surface, I get knocked off my feet again, taking the hedgehog with me. He pushes me off. Again his green eyes glare at me. They soften a little when he sees me on the verge of tears but he then huffs and turns away. "Um... Who are you and what are you doing on Angel Island?"
