It's been over a week since I've last heard from James. He didn't try to text or call me. I didn't try too as well. How could you talk to someone after that? The situation was just one big mess. Everyone disappeared as well. Holly texts me every other day. She didn't bring James up once. Some nights I waited on the steps by the front door, to see if he would come in. But he never did. School was quiet. I got the normal life I wanted. Part of me wished I never opened my big mouth. David hasn't messed with me ever since we fought. Which was very odd. Going to school was hard, but I had to go. I walked into my English class. Maddie was sitting with her friends chatting. I quietly sunk into my seat, trying to go unnoticed. Maddie was holding out her hand. She had some new bracelet on. "Wow Maddie! Who's the lucky guy?" Ash asked.
Maddie ran her fingers across the bracelet. "My new boyfriend of course! He's been showering me with gifts all week! Yesterday he bought me a dozen roses, day before he brought me a cream latte extra buttercream extra hot. Today was the bracelet."
"That's only three days." Her other friend said. Maddie gave her a dirty look. She looked away. Maddie smiled. "Tonight, he's taking me out on a date."
Ash smiled. "You're so lucky. I wish I met a guy like that." Ash leaned closer to Maddie to whisper something, but I could still hear her. "Does he have any single friends?"
They giggled like they were in the fourth grade. "I mean, he does have a hot best friend. Maybe I could try to hook you guys up." She smirked as if she was proud.
"What's your new man's name?" The second friend asked. The word that rolled off of Maddie's tongue, I will never forget the twist and pull that it caused my heart. "James." I couldn't believe it. James is actually dating Maddie! But he said he never would. Why did he change his mind? I pulled my phone out and texted James.
I heard you're dating Maddie now.
He didn't text me back. Normally he answered right away. As I looked up from my phone. Maddie was standing in front of my desk. I rolled my eyes at her. "Can I help you with something?"
She crossed her arms and pushed her hair behind her back. "Ash said you were ease dropping on our conversation."
"You talk so loud half of the school could probably hear you." I mumbled.
She slammed her hands on my desk. "You stay away from my man. Don't text him, call him. No communication. Got it?" She shot me a death glare before storming back over to her desk. I slid into my chair. This has to be a nightmare. This couldn't be real. I grabbed my backpack and left the room. I went over to my locker. Pulled my phone out and called James. It went straight to voicemail. I wasn't going to leave a voicemail of me blabbering to him about Maddie. I called Holly. She answered right away. "Jessica is everything okay?"
"Am I allowed to see you?" It sounded dumb, but I honestly didn't know where to find her. I tried going to her house and she wasn't home. "Um duh. We're best friends. Come meet me in the library. I'm trying to finish my homework." I hung up and made my way there. Maddie's voice was still ringing in my ears.
Look what my new boyfriend bought me!
You stay away from my man. Don't text him, call him. No communication. Got it?
I quietly opened the library doors. Although it wasn't quiet on the inside. Holly was in the back corner cussing up a storm. The librarian was trying to keep her nose deep in a book. Probably to stop from going off on Holly. As I got closer, she had cards stacked in a tower. She was gluing the cards onto each other. I crossed my arms. She slowly looked up at me. "It's last minute yes, but I don't really care about the grade." I sat down in a chair next to her. Holly was still gluing the cards. "I'm sorry I didn't hang out with you in a week. I figured you just needed space." Holly stood up to get close to the top.
