The Contest

I had just gotten back to the Owl House, but no one was there. Feeling bored, I leave and go into town. On a wall of one of the building I see a flier for a contest.  An artistic magic contest, where you try to find the most creative thing you can do with your magic for the contest and show the judges. The contest was taking place in this building (and apparently the entrance is on the other side) right now! I grabbed the flier and ran around to the entrance. At the entrance was a gargoyle.

"Err I'm here for the contest!" I held up the flier. The gargoyle looked down at me and gave me a toothy grin.

"Great, there's room for one more." The gargoyle's voice was guttural and grating. Something about that grin and that voice unsettled me, but I ignored it and went inside the building. It was dimly lit and there were many people here. I overheard them speaking amongst eachother.

"When is the contest going to start?" "I heard they were waiting for the last person to arrive." "That's nice that they're waiting, but I seriously haven't got all day. I have to be somewhere soon. Where is the last person anyways?"

Someone came into the room from another room in the building, "Our last person has arrived, the judging will begin momentarily." Everyone then turns to me and gives me this unnatural grin.  I should've known this was too good to be true. The person who just entered claps their hands to get everyone's attention and the people all turn back to them. "Alright, can you come with me?" They then dragged a random person into the room they came from. This went on for a while until I was the only one left in the room.

The lights go out and I pull out a glyph from my pocket, hoping it was a light glyph. Sure enough, when I active it, an orb of light illuminates through the room. "Did you just do that with a piece of paper?" It was the same person as before but they were much closer now. The lights went back on and they were directly infront of me, giving me that unnatural grin. They looked like a normal witch except for their long pointed teeth. Their piercing eyes seemed to stare directly into my soul. I shuddered slightly.

I feel a sharp pain and everything goes black. When my vision returns, I'm in a flowerbed in a meadow. That sharp pain... Am I dead? Suddenly the sky became dark as dark gray clouds rolled in. Before was now the Golden Guard.

"I know you've been thinking about me a lot. This contest is your chance to impress me." I knew it was him speaking, but he didn't sound like him. He sounded like that gargoyle! He pulled off his mask to reveal the witch who I assume stabbed me. The witch gave me an even larger grin than before. "Impress me, (Y/N)."

"N-no. You're not him." I back away carefully before turning and running.

"Oh (Y/N), stop being so silly~" The witch's voice echoes through the meadow now. I turn and they're right behind me. I pull out a fire glyph and throw it at them. "Are you attacking me, (Y/N)? Why would you attack someone you love~" What a creep... "Very well. If you want to play that game, we can fight." Ice then rose from the ground all around me. I used a fire glyph to melt the ice. The witch was gone. That's when I went flying. I hit an invisible wall and fell to the ground. I looked up weakly to see the witch stepping towards me with a grin on their face as my vision starts to fade. I take out a fire glyph and throw it at them and everything goes black again.

I woke up in crumbling, charred ruins of a building. "Did I do that?" Of course, not.

"No, I did. You were unconscious." I knew that voice. The Golden Guard. "Do you know what happened here before you fell unconscious?"

"Err... there was a contest flier. I went in hoping to participate in the contest. There was a creepy gargoyle outside the door as well... When I got in people were muttering things asking why it hadn't started and a mysterious person entered the room from another part of the building and told them I was there. They all looked at me with this creepy grin before the person started taking the others into the room they came from. When I was the only one left, the lights went off. They came back on with that person right in  front of me. I felt a sharp pain and then a blacked out..." He nods. "Something happened after. I awoke in a meadow and the person was..." I couldn't tell him about them dressing as him...

"Was what?"

"Uhh they appeared as someone I knew and told me to impress them, but they sounded like the gargoyle. We fought and I used a fire glyph and then I woke up."

"Who?"

"It's not important."

"Tell me."

"You....?"

"Me? Is there a reason for that?"

"No reason ok bye" I then ran off. Of course, he wasn't going to let that happen. I was lifted into the air and he walked over.

"Are you blushing?" Oh no...

"This is really embarrassing please just let me go."

"Fine, but don't fall for that contest scam again. I might not be there next time. I'm still going to get to the bottom of this, but there could be more people doing this." I was dropped and I quickly ran off back to the Owl House. When I returned, everyone was in the living room. Lilith was asleep on the couch. Luz and Eda looked concerned and King was crying.

"Woah, what happened here?"

"I'm not a king, everyone's been lying to me!"

Luz then explained to me what happened while I was gone.

I try to calm down King, "Hey, King, you're still the king of my heart."

"Mine, too." Luz and Eda agree, "So what happened with you?"

"Well there was this contest..." I proceeded to tell them about the events of the day minus the parts about the Golden Guard.
