After several years spent writing lyrics, dancing around plots for screenplays, and scrapping messily with various short stories, this is my first attempt at crafting a novel. It is currently a jigsaw of sorts, as I imagine most people's attempts at writing a coherent book are.I know the story outline fairly intimately, I have all the corners in place, and I can visualise exactly how my characters are going to arrive at an epic finale. The whole thing is playing in my head on a loop like an oddball mash-up of the pastoral landscapes of Mackenzie Crook's adaptation of 'Worzel Gummidge' versus the 1980s teen adventure movie celebration of 'Stranger Things', but there are still many pieces left to carve into shape.
I'm currently working towards twenty nine chapters, with numerous interludes that consist of supporting information, and I am just past the halfway mark in fleshing my notes out. I like to take my time honing each paragraph when I write, and I won't be publishing the notes.
I mainly started to post the story on Wattpad as an incentive to get it finished. Perhaps a chapter a month....? I could suddenly find myself pulled along at warp speed to reveal a finished story if I receive enough cheers from the sidelines. [UPDATE: A chapter a month is harder than I thought! Life is a busy blur of little kids and work right now!]
Anyhow, I'd love to hear what you think of it so far, and I sincerely hope that you all enjoy the prologue and first sixteen chapters.
Cheers,
Ric
P.s. Amazed to see that The Brightlings was ranked #1 in 'Environment' out of 3.8k stories after only 6 days on the site. Not sure how that works!? But I guess it's a good thing, right? 😊
