Chapter 1: The Storm
"Wake up Kalah, we have to get going to the beach!" Said my Aunt Cass. I sat up from my bed and heard the car running outside. My alarm clock had been going off for more than an hour but as usual, I slept through it. I wanted to go back to sleep, but I forced myself out of bed.
I ran down the stairs to the kitchen where I quickly got a box of cereal out of the pantry, and started stuffing it in my mouth. I jumped into the car, trailing a cereal trail wherever I went.
We were going to the beach because I love to ride boats, with the wind in my hair, and water on my face, it gave me this feeling that nothing else could give me. My aunt and uncle say I get it from my parents. You see, I never knew much about them.
When I was four, my Aunt Cass, Uncle Dave, my parents and I went to the beach. My mom and dad were out on a boat about a mile and a half from shore, the boat was called "The Rainbow" because there was a thin rainbow stripe, running over the edge of the boat, and the sails. Me, and my aunt and uncle, we're playing on the beach. Of course I don't remember any of this but they assured me it all happened. They said I would wave to my parents when they were out on the water, even though they couldn't see me, my aunt and uncle thought it was so cute.
We were making Sandcastle's when it started to rain. The rain got harder and harder until eventually my aunt decided that we had to go home. So my aunt and I were sitting in the car while my uncle sat on the wet beach, waiting for my parents to come in from the sea. But they didn't. The waves got bigger and bigger until eventually Uncle Dave set out a search party. But they were never found.
Back to the present. I am now a twelve year old girl, and I had just jumped out of the car, which is now full of cereal crumbs. You can't blame me! Trying to finish the last chapter of "Island Of The Blue Dolphin" and rapidly eating cereal, while riding in a bumpy car is VERY hard to do.
I threw my box of cereal in the nearest trash can, ran up the dock toward my boat, "The Justice" It was a white boat with a beautiful blue trim on the outside, and wasn't too big, but it was the perfect size for me. I had been riding it since I was eight and I was excited, now that summer had started again, to ride my boat.
After I looked out at the beautiful ocean, got my life vest on, and jumped in my boat, I was a mile and a half out at sea, and I stared into the big wide blue ocean, there was an island about 5 miles from the shore named BedMard Island, but no one dared going on it. The animals were too dangerous and the mayor of the town didn't want to spend any money on something that wouldn't make money on. People say that anyone who goes on that island, doesn't come back! They also say that it's home to ghosts! I mean, it's probably not true, but still, really scary.
The island was very long and had a nice beach that went all around the outside of the island, but there was a mountain on the island that was so tall that at some parts of the day, a big shadow appeared because the sun was behind the mountain.
Just then, on the edge of the island beach, I saw something white, and wondered what it was. It wasn't a white color that you would see in the wild, so I assumed it was man-made. That was when a little bit of rain trickled down my arm, and I saw storm clouds rolling in. I started to head back to shore, because riding in the rain is NOT fun. I know from experience.
I started the motor but I didn't go forward. I put it as high as it would go but it didn't budge. I had never been in this situation so I was freaking out. I looked down into the water and saw the current pushing against the boat. The waves grew bigger, and the rain poured harder. Water was splashing out my face in every direction and it was freezing. The island seemed to be growing bigger, or I was moving closer! And I was moving fast. I felt a wave of fear wash over me. I pushed the engine blast but it did nothing. I pushed the engine harder than I had ever pushed it in my life! But it did absolutely nothing.
With the wind and rain pushing against the thick white sale and the current pushing against the hard bottom of the boat, I stood no chance of moving toward the shore. The waves rolled higher and higher, and bigger and bigger, till I saw the biggest wave I have ever seen in my life! I felt like it was 1 million feet tall! But of course that's not true, but if you are in an ocean with giant waves crashing at you and every moment and you see a wave so big and you couldn't say a number you would say 1 million to.
It was coming closer to the boat then the current was moving me away from it. Now I am an awesome surfer, and I know when you see a big wave swim toward it so you don't get crushed. But I could not move. The wave came closer and closer until........
CRASH!!!!!!!I woke up on the shores of BedMard Island.
