Max walked down the long corridor of the castle, away from the group.
"What was that about?" Maddie asked me in a loud whisper voice.
"I don't know." I answered. I guess moving affected him more than I knew. I thought he'd easily make friends at school, but maybe that wasn't the case. When he mentioned his friends, his mood suddenly dropped. "I'll be back." I said.
I walked down over next to Max who was staring blankly at one of the paintings. It was of a beautiful village. The trees along the village looked like the trees that were outside, maybe it was a painting of the woods.
But I didn't come here to look at art, I came to talk to Max.
"Hey." I said.
"Hey." He said back, still looking at the painting.
"I... I never thought that moving would be just as hard on you as it was on me." I said. "I mean, you had a life in Maple Grove that you had to leave behind, I didn't."
"You had a life." He said.
"No actually, I didn't." I say. We both laughed. I was kinda a loner who didn't really get involved. The only time I wasn't quite was when I was with Addy. With her I was able to come out of my shell.
"Things were great back home, it's not fair that Mom and Dad get to just pack us up and move us just like that." Max said. "I mean, Cody hasn't even texted me back since we moved. It's like we've just vanished. And now everything with Dad cheating on Mom, they're getting a divorce now. I've seen too many shows were the siblings got split up, and you're the only friend I have left. Even if you are really annoying."
"I didn't know you considered me as a friend." I teased, nudging his elbow.
He tries not to smile by bitting his lower lip, making me laugh even more.
"Yeah, well don't let it go to your head." He said. "You're still my annoying little sister."
"And you're still my annoying older brother." I said. "Don't worry, I'm sure we'll both end up with Mom, and has for Cody, who needs him? You got me." I tease. "But in all seriousness, you'll make friends. Better ones than Cody if that loser won't text you back."
"Thanks." He said. "So will you. Not that we won't find Addy, because we will."
"Thanks." I said. We stand there in silence for a minute before I get uncomfortable with how quite it was. "Well let's go back to the group loser." I say.
