It felt awkward.
Too awkward.
Some random little girl was staring at Katsuki in awe. Her doe eyes looked like they were sparkling the longer she stared at him. He does everything in his power to distract himself. But whenever he looks up, the kid was still staring at him. "Hey mister", the girl speaks up. He decides to acknowledge the child. He did not want to appear rude in any way. "Yes?"
"I like your hair."
Katsuki was taken aback. He wasn't used to compliments–due to the fact that many made it their mission to avoid him. He smiles at her. "Thanks. I like yours too."
The child's own grin broadens as she tugs lightly at her two braids. "Thank you! My mommy did them. She even put pretty pink bows on me. Pink is my favorite color. See?" She hold up the end of one black braid to show the detective the neatly tied bow. "Your mother is very neat with her craft."
"Mhm! She's a beauty magician."
Katsuki holds in his laugh. He knew the child meant that her mother was a beautician. It was so cute how she said beauty magician. The child may have had a difficult time saying beautician so she stuck with that. He jerks his head when he sees a raven haired woman turning around and giving him an ugly glare. "You should be ashamed of yourself. Talking to my child as if you know her. And Miyu! Turn around!" She yanks the child forward and cuts her eyes back to Katsuki with a uncomfortable look one last time before scolding her daughter again.
He could hear her say 'don't talk to strangers. Especially ones that look like criminals.' He didn't blame the woman for being protective. Yet her words stabbed through him like a knife. Katsuki takes in a deep breath and exhales calmly. He turns back to the papers that were scattered on the table.
When you first glance at Katsuki. You don't see a kind hearted man. One that can be there for someone and encourage others to do great things. He looks very discourteous, a bad guy perhaps—but he's not; not anymore at least, like he was in his junior high and high school. Katsuki will stand his ground, but he's not a pissy person 24/7. Though this leads to people judging him and not giving him a chance. He's grown used to this treatment over the years. There was only one person that wasn't so wary of him the first time meeting. And that was his partner, one that could be slightly annoying sometimes.
Eh, scratch that. Most of the time.
And speak of the devil. He walks through the diner and looks around to see Katsuki at a booth. He makes his way over and slides into the empty seat across from him. "Enjoying your nightly breakfast pretty boy?"
"What's it to you, Hanta?"
"Making small talk, that's all. Looks good." Hanta picks up a spare fork and steals a pancake off of the blond's plate. He hums in delight after he stuffs the dough into his mouth. "Hmm, that's good."
"How did you find me? I thought you were at the station a minute filing paperwork."
Hanta makes clicking sounds with his teeth and lays his chin in his palm. "Had to take care of something else for the boss."
"Is it for the case", Katsuki inquired.
"Nah."
Katsuki visibly looks disappointed. Unlike Hanta, who was not too productive with the cold case at hand, Katsuki had an urgency to get it solved. It was a case from fourteen years ago, involving his mother and father. His parents were killed in a explosion when they went inside the house. He was the only survivor because he had went back to the car to grab something that they asked his to grab. He was angry for a long time after that and wanted to seek vengeance as soon as he could. But his grandmother and grandfather taught him differently and raised him to be a calm and collective man. Katsuki soon turned his attention to becoming a detective, where he was determined to find out the whole truth.
