The light of the sun was a soft purple hue in the sky by the time she reached the forest of her clans' land. Reina fell to the earth in an exhausted heap on the ground, dragging in harsh breaths. But the urgency that she felt forced her back up but by sheer force of will and she lifted herself up to run towards her home.
Gasping for air as she went, she pushed herself to run even faster, desperation fueling her legs to go past their extreme. She had to make it to her dad before those dogs did. She needed to tell him that she messed up so bad and that they had to leave. Reina choked in air, she hadn't realized she had been sobbing until the cool wind struck the watery trails, making her face cold compared to the heat radiating from her body.
It was her fault that they might get in trouble, her fault that one, or both, of them might die or be imprisoned. The guilt struck her in blows when she thought of how she had ruined the tenuous peace that her dad had worked so hard to create for the family. This guilt kept her from giving in to her bodies complaints and stopping. Her tears blurred the trees around her as pushed her body faster, rushing past any limits of strength.
The trees in front of her finally began to thin until she reached their backyard, stumbling to a halt right at the tree line. A wave of anxiety dashed through her, she was not relieved. Every light that they had was on in the house, casting long rays across the yard in front of her like accusing fingers. The sun had set a while ago so it was barely around dinner time, but they never had all of the lights on. Never.
Dread seeped through her heart and spread like wildfire through her body. Where there had once been strength and determination, there was now left a sick sense of dread. She felt as though lead weights were tied around her limbs, inhibiting her progress from going any further.
Too late.
Those words rang through her mind and slowed her pounding heart to a stop. What would she do now if they really were in there, waiting for her? Should she just run now and come for her father after she had a chance to come up with some type of plan? Or should she just face what awaited her, her rightful punishment for trying to be free and selfish? Reina's mind buzzed with worry and discordant thoughts. Until she heard blood curdling cries that reached through her hazy thoughts and tilted the fabric of her world.
Those were the cries of someone being tormented.
'No, Please no!' Her eyes burned and she nearly fell to her knees at how pained the cries sounded.
They were torturing her father, no doubt questioning him about her whereabouts in case she had fled elsewhere. Reina's mind began to clear as one thought formalized. Yes, she was terrified of what awaited her, but that hesitation was no excuse to leave her father and let him suffer for her own foolishness alone. Setting her mind firm, she walked with sure steps towards her house.
Another yell from the house hastened her steps until she pushed the back door open and raced towards the sound of gasping groans behind her living room door.
Before she was able to open the door, it swung open. A beautiful man stood by the door with a grim face, unaffected by her sudden appearance. She stopped focusing on him when a voice behind him she knew too well said "Well, well, well! What do we have here daddyo!"
Reina went to push past the man at the door but stopped when his arm shot out and she froze where she was as her mind fully understood the scene that she had briefly seen... it was so much worse than she had imagined. A tall man sauntered towards her into the hallway, one of his hands wiping the other with a rag that was drenched in a dark red, still not able to get all of it as it dripped on the floor. With a disgruntled sigh he let the wet rag fall on the floor.
