An Unforeseen Opportunity

The way I start my mornings is never the same, a result of my interest in criminology. Whenever you are being tracked, you could be tracked for as few as maybe ten minutes, or up to days, weeks, maybe even years on end by someone waiting to make their move. People inevitably have patterns, it's just the way we work. I'm sure that even I show some sort of pattern in my not so routinely routine that if tracked for long enough could be exploited.

This morning I started with my usual, a bagel with some avocado. Basic enough, but its what I had picked up at the store from my last run, I also grabbed a few carrots with some hummus to make sure I had enough calories to get me through the morning and to my first class without issue. Then I brushed my teeth and threw on some clothes without a thought, again, to avoid any unnecessary patterns. I'm lucky enough to have an apartment instead of a dorm so I wouldn't have to worry about any creepy roommates, but that does mean I have a bit of a commute to my University, To-Oh University to be exact.

In my first criminology class of the day, Criminal Procedures and Evidence, I usually sit next to this really brainy kid with a Beiber cut. He really needs to get that fixed. He's smart, but he doesn't really seem to be a genius. Someone that I have noticed to be even smarter than him is a bum that randomly comes to class of his own accord, I think they must be friends since he always sits on the other side of Light during the lectures. I believe his name is Ryuzaki something or other. It's hard to catch when the two are speaking in whispers with the combination of the professors booming voice. He's not bad looking, his shaggy black hair actually suits him, but he does wear the same get up everyday without fail. A loose white shirt and some ill-fitted blue-jeans. It's hard to tell if he just doesn't shower or if he took a page out of some billionaires book and only has that one outfit in multiple so he doesn't have to think about it in the morning.

Once I got to the class this morning, the professor was already booming about the psychology of criminal patterns and tendencies, and there was Light and Ryuzaki already seated in the front row. As I was moving forward I noticed the two already chatting with one another, rather conspicuously I might add. Ryuzaki is nearly always in control of his tells, no fingers twitching, no shifts in eye contact that wouldn't be deemed appropriate, and no breaks in speech. He's like a machine of some sort. Light on the other hand is almost forceful of his tells, as if he's non-verbally trying to communicate he's nervous or inferior all the time, it's very strange.

Once the lecture was over the odd pair remained seated, I was about to get up and leave before Ryuzaki called my name, I wasn't even aware that he knew it...

"Ah, Y/n!" I was just speaking with light here about interning at my private detective organization!"

Private detective organization? So that's why he's inconsistent with his attendance to class, he's already done it! And has experience?

He leaned across Light with the same wide eyes and emotionless expression that he usually speaks with. I'd never seen the front of his face this close before, I hadn't realized that his eyes were practically black before. They were hauntingly beautiful as they seemed to stare into my every insecurity. No wonder Light always tried to seem so submissive around this guy.

"It's currently covering the Kira case... I understand if that would be too much for you, but from observing you these past few weeks I doubt that it would be."

So he'd been observing me? This was the kind of basket case that I've been working so hard to avoid, I wonder how much he's observed about my routine.

Finally Light spoke up, all of his previous "tells" had seemingly disappeared without a trace.

"You really should join the organization y/n, I'll be joining as well!"

It seems a bit risky considering I don't know much about either of them, and especially considering that I knew one of them had been observing me.

"You know, I think I'll..."
