Present Day...
"Hey, guys..." Lina spoke, tugging onto Val's and my shirt, "it's not too late to turn back now" she whimpered as she stared at the large clown face painted on the house. It's mouth was opened, meaning the entrance to the building.
Val grumbled, "Let's just get this over with, come on"
I followed behind Val, reflecting back to the day I got myself into this mess. Back then, if I had kicked the Joker and ran away, Barbara would've been captured. And I would've probably been shot before I could even reach the crowd.
. . . I'm pathetic.
As soon as Val turned the doorknob, we were welcomed with Harley shrieking with excitement, "My little ones!" She walked over to us and wrapped her arms around Lina, greeting her with a kiss on the cheek, and then moved on to Val to do the same. "Mwah! I'm so glad the three of you are doing so well!" She moved to me, but unlike Lina and Val, I didn't move my arms to embrace her back.
The Joker got up from his couch that faced the television and clasped his hands, with that familiar mischievous grin, "It's been forever since we've reunited as a family like this"
"Maybe it's because we don't want to" Lina whistled as she rocked on her heels back and forth. Val bumped her shoulder, breaking her posture.
"That hurt..." Harley's mouth formed into a sulky pout.
Frowning, I ignored their comments and stared at Joker with my arms crossed, "Can you just tell us what you want?"
As you can probably guess, sometimes he has 'favors' for us to do for him if we wanted money from him.
"This is why you're my Ace. Straight to the point, just the way I like it" he snapped his fingers. Lina made herself comfortable in the couch while Val stayed standing, letting his hair get fixed up by Harley.
"I need (Y/N) to work with Black Mask"
My arm muscles quivered as I uncrossed them, "Huh?"
"And for what?" Lina asked as she rotated our way.
"And why me? I already did you a favor that one time. I had to save you from that guy who almost burned you alive in that garage" I moved my hand around to emphasize my words.
He mused, "Huh... when was– ahh, I remember. But (Y/N)... I never asked for that favor, now did I?"
I stood still at his words.
It didn't count...?
"That was all out of your own free will"
My mind went blank and shattered into pieces as the brick of realization hit me. He was right...
He never asked for it. I saved him because I... wanted to...?
Why the hell‐
I think I got so used to saving him time after time, that it's become a engraved in my head. If Joker is in trouble, save him and he'll do you a favor. Maybe that's the rule my stupid brain came up with on it's own.
Almost 4 years working for the Joker and now my head is all fucked up.
"For what, you asked my dear Lina?" He looked towards her as Harley chimed in instead,
"Obviously to just infiltrate that sucker" she moved her hands together as if she was holding a bat and swung it with a smirk.
Without even realizing, Joker was already standing in front of me, observing how I'd react in the next seconds. He had a visible smile, just waiting for some news. "What? Not up for it?" He spoke quietly.
