"Oh my gosh how many times are you going to pee?"
Chenle had just came back from his fourth trip to the bathroom, his best friend in the exact spot he had left her, sat in front of her vanity, aggressively beating her face with a beauty blender.
"It's called being hydrated Kaili, look it up"
She ignored his response, taking a sip of her coffee before resuming her work on her face.
"Aren't you going to get ready?"
"Lili the only thing I do to get ready is put on my uniform"
She pouted at him in the mirror while brushing some eyeshadow onto her eyelids.
"Yeah but this is the game to qualify for nationals, aren't you going to do anything special?"
"Well I'm at your house instead of my own, that's different from normal"
The blending brush was tossed at his head, and Chenle wondered why his best friend was so fond of throwing things.
"That doesn't count!"
"What do you want me to do? Some sort of ritual? OoooooOOOOOooooo please let us qualify for nationals" He wiggled his fingers in her direction before blowing out a candle that was on her bedside table, the smoke trailing up towards the ceiling.
"I know you were being dumb, but blowing out my candle counts, even if it was very rude"
He let out a laugh as he flopped back onto her bed, eyes following the smoke as it disappeared.
"Fuck"
He was broken out of his peaceful moment when he heard his best friend curse. Looking over he sees her with her index finger between her lips, a straightening iron held in her other hand.
"How do you even do that Li?" He questions, but he gets up anyway, going over to take the hot iron out of her hand and inspect the burn.
He digs through the many drawers of her bathroom until he finds a first aid kit, and he applies burn cream to her finger before wrapping it with a bandaid, Kaili staring at him fondly the entire time.
"There," he places a kiss in the bandaid and stands up from his spot in front of her, grabbing the straightening iron.
"Lele I can't cheer with a bandaid on, I'll look dumb"
"You were the one dumb enough to burn yourself, plus no one will even notice. You think too much"
She glances up from looking at her finger, instead looking at her best friend's reflection in her mirror, his eyes totally focused on straightening her hair.
"I love you Lele"
His hands stilled their motions for a second, but he quickly recovered.
"I love you too Lili"
Both smiled to themselves, neither realizing the way in which the other meant it.
"There! All done, and I didn't burn myself, because I have brain cells"
Kaili just rolled her eyes, collecting the top half of her hair into a ponytail and handing her best friend the white bow to slide in.
"We just have to get changed and then we can head out"
Chenle grabbed his bag, taking his uniform and heading to the bathroom while Kaili stayed in her room.
"Hey did I drop my other sock-"
He came back in the room, one sock in his hand, but his words died off when he realized.
Kaili was standing in the middle of her room, clad in a sports bra and a pair of spandex, and she turned to face him when she walked in.
"Let me see," she took a few steps closer to him to get a better look at the one in his hand, and Chenle cursed himself for subconsciously backing away when she did so.
"Is it that one?"
She pointed over next to her bedside table, the black sock laying right next to the leg, but Chenle couldn't will his body to move.
Kaili decided to just grab the sock herself, ignoring his weird behavior and tossing it to him before grabbing the other parts of her uniform to continue getting ready.
"You better hurry up Le, we don't want to be late"
She slipped the final peice of her uniform on, the shell reading NHS across the front, and he quickly snapped out of it, rushing to slide his warmups on and follow her down the stairs to the door.
"Bye sweetie good luck, good luck to you too chenle, play well!"
"Bye mom, love you, I'll text you updates!"
"Uh yeah thanks Mrs.Xiao"
The two teens put on their normal shoes and headed out to Chenle's car, climbing in and heading to pick up a younger player.
Within five minutes Kaili was already complaining about being cold in her uniform and Chenle scolded her like he usually did.
"Basketball season is in the winter Lili, you should know to bring a jacket"
The blanket she brought was draped over her bare legs and Chenle reached back with one hand to grab his letterman's jacket from the back seat, tossing it at her.
They arrived at their school just as the other team's bus pulled in, and the younger player rushed to make it to the locker rooms while Chenle stayed to make sure Kaili didn't hurt herself somehow between the parking lot and the door.
They were heading towards the entrance when the other teams bus started emptying out, their players and cheerleaders alike walking behind the two Neo High students, and Chenle tried to ignore the comments he heard the team making about his best friend.
"Why don't the girls at our school look like that?"
"That uniform looks way too good on her"
"Do you think she's single?"
Chenle gritted his teeth as they continued, and he found himself putting an arm over Kaili's shoulders, drawing attention to his name on the jacket she was wearing and glaring.
The boys quickly shut up, and Chenle smiled at the extra motivation to crush them on the court.
"Okay, I've got to go meet the rest of the boys, I'll see you out there"
He kissed her forehead before running off, and Kaili stood there staring after him even as the other team filed past her.
Surely those butterflies were because she was excited for the game.
Yeah. That had to be it.
