"We want to talk about this?" Astrid asked, lounging on Wilhelm's bed. She played with a strand of her hair somewhat anxiously, as Wilhelm paced the room, chewing on his fingernail, definitely anxiously.
"No," He replied shortly. He continued to pace.
The Queen had announced that she would be visiting the boarding school all of three hours ago, allowing the teenagers no warning. It was only Wednesday, school being back for a total of three days, and the Queen was already sticking her nose where it shouldn't be.
Both Astrid and Wilhelm were aware that the Queen was en route to discuss wedding plans, and Astrid (Wilhelm was still in the dark about this plan; he would most definitely stop her) was quite prepared to come out then and there if the Queen insisted on this wedding.
"This is going to end badly," Wilhelm said suddenly. Astrid dragged her eyes from the door, where she had been keeping watch for when the Queen was to suddenly arrive, turning her attention curiously to her friend. "Like really badly. Worse than that damn video". He shook his head, his hands flying to the back of his neck, his head dipping downwards.
"Are you alright?" Astrid asked, moving to the edge of the bed in concern. "Wille, what can I do?"
"Shhh," He said harshly, but Astrid didn't take it with offence. She watched him with worry; she knew the signs of anxiety. Silently, she bit her lip and her eyes flicked between Wille and the door. "I ruined it," He muttered quietly, after an extremely long pause.
"Ruined what?" Astrid questioned. Wilhelm didn't reply, just began to pace again, chewing on his nail. "Wille. What did you ruin? Your relationship with Simon?" Wilhelm flinched.
Ah, that was it.
"You didn't ruin it," Astrid said, Wilhelm coming to a stop. He gave her an expression of disbelief, "You didn't," She repeated, "Everything that is happening right now is because of the institution that you work for. This is happening because of your mother and father, because of the media. Blame anyone else, just don't blame yourself. You haven't done anything wrong".
"I did," He replied shortly.
"Wilhelm..."
"I fell in love with a boy," He said sharply. He made eye contact with Astrid. "Now tell me I did nothing wrong".
Astrid said nothing.
"Yeah, that's what I thought," He said bitterly. He went back to pacing.
Astrid could feel the anger flaring up in her chest. She was angry at the King and Queen for forcing Wilhelm to conform to their standards of 'normal', angry at Erik for dying and not sticking around to help Wilhelm, angry at herself for not being able to do anything to change it.
Before Astrid could say another word to Wilhelm, the door to his dorm room swung open and there stood the Queen, in all her glory. She was dressed in a dark blue classy suit, her hair done to perfection as always. She glided through the door as if she was walking on water.
"I'm glad to see that you're both here, it means we can get straight into wedding planning," The Queen said in all seriousness. She was barely three steps into the room, and Astrid was about to bring her whole world down.
Taking a breath, Astrid looked to Wilhelm. He was turned away from his mother, his eyes directed to the window as opposed to her. Now or never, Astrid thought. The Queen was still babbling on about dresses or something, but Astrid just came out and said it.
"There isn't going to be any wedding".
The Queen looked annoyed by the statement, but wasted no time. "We talked about this, Astrid..."
"No, you talked, and you forced us to listen. There will be no wedding," She replied, "Because I am in love with a woman".
The Queen's eyes went wide, Wilhelm whirling around, his mouth agape. "You are a disgrace!" The Queen announced furiously, "You have to ruin everything you touch. This wedding would have benefited you in ways you cannot even imagine, and you've decided to go and throw it all away!" She shook her head, Wilhelm watching on in disbelief, "No, I refuse to accept this, and I refuse to take responsibility for your shortcomings. This wedding is happening, and neither of you will ruin it!"
She stormed for the room in a blind fury; Astrid thought she could see the steam billowing from the Queen's ears as she left the room. The dorm was plunged into silence. Wilhelm was staring at Astrid.
"What?" She asked, breaking the silence with a single word.
"'I'm in love with a woman'?" He questioned.
She shrugged innocently. "Exaggeration never killed anyone"
"You are ridiculous".
"No, the person who's being ridiculous is her," Astrid jerked her head in the direction of the door, "You're in love with a boy and I like women, and she's still trying to get a wedding out of us. I can deal with people not accepting people of the LGBT community, homophobes will always exist, but this is fucking over the top".
"Welcome to the royal family," Wilhelm said humorlessly, "We don't accept anyone who is less than perfect".
"Guess I'm disowned".
Wilhelm's eyes widened. The two broke out into laughter.
